Re: NEW plan - 1600 TURBO + oval + downunder
Just climbed under the car holding the oil cooler again. Where I was first thinking of putting it is pretty much the best spot possible.

Re: NEW plan - 1600 TURBO + oval + downunder
Back in the shed this arvo (lit. "Afternoon") and I've come up with a solution for fuel pump mounts that doesn't involve drilling holes or disturbing the factory paint. I forgot to do the mount on the bottom of the tank before the leaks were brazed up, but I glad I didn't now. A heavy, vibrating pump hanging off the tank seems like a bad idea after all.

Trial fit. I'm using a drainage hole, the reserve tank lever hole and one of the master cylinder bolts to mount this plate. The bolts are tagged on it so I can easily remove the filter from the passenger side of the car with one arm.

Tested with the tank in position. All fits nicely with room for pipes and hoses. The plate needs a few more speed holes and the like for wiring and pipe mounts, but it's pretty good to go.

If its still too noisy it looks like you could easily use a set of those rubber mounts with the studs to mount the plate.
They make them in 6mm and 8mm and probably other size studs.

Some more progress...
Lines all sorted and installed in the front. Just waiting for the tank liner to turn up and that'll all be finished.

Started on a cup brace system for it today. I would have bought one, but the oval has a different shock absorber tower system than the later ones so I had to make my own.

1" thickwall crossbar. I'll be building some diagonals to get to the chassis horns next. Should be stiff as and great to throw after I'm finished.

Should be able to make a 5 bar, 2 more diagonals going forwards to the front of the frame horns.
Make sure you have room for a starter, some of them are very long and will interfere.

Re: NEW plan - 1600 TURBO + oval + downunder
I'm not planning to do the 5 bar thing at this stage. Like you say, it can take up a lot of room and I need space for the oil cooler in that spot. In my previous car I had a 3 bar setup and that made a huge difference. I'm confident it will be enough for this car too.

The crossbar is what interferes with the starter.
It's usually offset forward for that reason.

I did buy the 5 piece one but couldn't fit it due to my heater boxes at the time. Now my new motor only has 'J' pipes but the additional oil cooler above gearbox is in the waypetew wrote:^ #like
