My deck was huge on the Al case.. I ended up with .125 with OUT any shims. My heads are 54cc, so I ended up with a 7.3:1 CR. Just fine since I'm boosted, but way too much deck for N/A in my opinion.
Nice - you should be able to run plenty of boost with that CR. I'm waiting on some cylinder shims and copper head gaskets to get mine to 7.8. Also waiting on shims to get my endplay to .005-.006. My old case needed .033" stacked to get .006 but the new case needs .039" stacked. Sure wish I had a ACVW shop nearby.... Unfortunately the parts I need aren't carried by the local flaps.

Yea.. I didn't used to live anywhere near close to a good parts house, but living in SA now, I've got a pretty good local spot for parts.

Oh yea I also was going to mention that...

IT RUNS AGAIN!!!!

Worked about 8.5hrs straight this afternoon and was rewarded with a non-eventful cam run-in. I left all the boost piping off during the break-in, so I'll still have to put all of that stuff in place before driving. I'll also go back through the valve adjustment again to check everything over, but so far so good. No leaks from the engine or trans so far

Such a relief.. more updates to come later. I didn't take any pics. Way to busy working to bother with the camera.

Yup.. hopefully. He's due on Wednesday, so we'll see how much I get done. At least I got all the hard work done. Just want to get the initial rough tune done, and get all my crap cleaned up in the garage again.

Thanks!

A clean garage is for wimps  I spent about six hundred bucks on cabinets to go in my garage. I had so much stuff on the floor it really sucked. Now it all nice and tidy out of the way and off the floor

Glad to hear you have it back together and running again. Now it's time to dust off your seat belt, turn up that boost controller and break your rings in the proper way

Can't wait to hear that 3K turbo whistle, it's just too bad I won't be there to hear it in person. :(

Well I finally got out and was able to drive the car today... This was the first time I started the engine since I did the cam break-in a couple of weeks ago. (Been pre-occupied  Our son Ryan was born on on 7/2. Everything is well, and he is definitely the coolest kid. VERY laid back and content. Easy to keep happy)

Anyways.. Got out and did some driving today since Momma was feeling better. First off.. GOOD GRIEF its a lot louder than it was before. I'm going to have to looking into muffler options I think. My left ear catches the brunt of the noise when cruising down the road. All in all it seems to run very well. A LOT faster than before. The cam change (engle 110) made a huge difference. The engine revs very freely now (saw a peak of 5200 during my run today). I'm still running 6lbs of boost, but plan to push it up to around 10-12 if I can get away with it. Should be a good strong engine. So far I haven't had any issues, hope it holds together LOL. I noticed the idle MAP is much higher then before. I'm going to do some more tuning to see if I can bring it down, but its almost double what it was before. I imagine the cam has a lot to do with that. Got a couple small exhaust leaks. I bought some crappy empi copper manifold gaskets, and they are half as thick as the ones CB sells, so I've got a couple of small leaks because of it. Also still have a drip of oil off the left hand valve cover. I'll be working with that tomorrow too.

Anyways.. Just thought I'd update my thread

Congratulations on your son!!!

I put an end to my oil leaks at the valve cover by doubling up on the gaskets but I'm using the stock covers with vents welded on and I had to weld additional material to the edges to keep them from sliding up and down but I haven't had a leak since. IIRC you are using the bolt on covers which I never had much luck with and since they're bolted on, I don't know if doubling up the gaskets would be a good idea as they may pull in at the bolt area when you tighten them up. I recommend the stock covers over the bolt on style.

Good luck with your tuning!

Do you have an oil pressure gauge inside the car? Appears I've got the same issue as TMM as of this morning. Drove the car to work and its running great so during the last mile, I decided to hammer it through second and third and my green light came on in third around 5500rpm. Checked my gauge and it was at zero so I shifted to neutral, shut the engine off and coasted to a stop. When I put the new shortblock together, I checked and double checked all of my clearances just as TMM did so I'm somewhat puzzled and somewhat ticked off that I've got a new problem now.

Only thing that makes any sense would be that the pickup tube is becoming uncovered. I may try making a pickup tube that picks up closer to the rear of the sump than in the center as this one does. If that doesn't help, I think I may try a deeper sump as the one I have installed now is the CB thin line sump but I really hate to reduce my ground clearance any more but it could be worth a try. Guess it's time for me to start a new thread....

Yea I have a gauge.. so far rock steady pressure. I've got a standard sized deep sump and I keep the oil level full to the stock level on the dipstick, so there is NO way I can imagine that I could ever suck dry.

Just looked at your sump again and I may try one just like it. Mine holds 1.5 quarts and has a flat bottom where yours is dished. Were the pickup tubes that came with your sump angled at the pickup end or straight like the factory tube? Are you running a 26 or 30mm pump?

My tube ended up being pretty straight and centered which I thought was amazing considering most after market pickups. My extension has an angle cut on the bottom of it.

I'm running a 30mm shadeck pump and running 5W-30 oil. I've got a 96 plate cooler and my oil temps so far have not gone past 210, while cruising yesterday I didn't get much past 180. This is good, as before the additional cooler on the old motor, it would get a little hot on me.
