By the way. I realized earlier today, that it would be so much easier to paint this thing in multiple sessions (kinda like you've been doing), instead of all at once like I did before. I don't have anywhere big enough to spread out all the different pieces to paint at one time. It would be way better if I concentrate on just the body first. Then be assembling and wiring while painting fenders, hood, doors, etc. as I go. I'm trying to avoid converting my carport into a paint booth.

Ya it defiantly turns out better(no tape lines and such.) but keep in mind that you have to be very precise of spraying all your parts the same way.(i.e. mix all the paint you will ever need for every part before you spray anything, mix thoroughly each and every time you spray. same amount of coats of color as well as clear. Believe it or not clear will change the color if not sprayed exactly the same way. (temp. and air pressure play a huge part in it as well.) as long as you doing everything in the same way you shouldn't have a problem. I Did my body a year ago the the doors two days ago and you can see a very slight change in the color and i used the same can of paint, same clear, same amount of coats in a 85 degree booth.... but dry times could have been different which will throw you off sometimes too... And i do this everyday all day. haha oh well...

You'd get a good laugh if you saw how I painted it last time. Standard backyard hack job. 3-sided open tarp carport. Doors still on the car, fenders bolted up loosely. Hood and rear engine cover on a couple saw-horses. Bumpers ON the car, just masked off. I went for the base coat, clear coat with pearl in the clear for my first and only HVLP experience. 10 gal Craftsman air compressor, no filter/dryer.
What FUN!
I got bugs, dust, orange peel, ect., etc.......I'm sure you can imagine. But it was metalic silver from one end to the other. Looked good from over 20 yards away. Most importantly, I wasn't too scared about getting a scratch here and there while off-roading.
I'd like to do a better job this time around. I've got a decent compressor and 60 gal tank. I bought a new paint gun from a Cornwell dealer a few years ago, should be good for shooting primer at least. Still need to get a good air dryer/cleaner. Setting up a temp paint booth will be the challenge.
I still haven't decided on a color(s) for sure, so I'm a little ways off, unfortunately. It will be nice to have a brain to pick, Robbie, when the fun begins again! Thanks

I guess it's time to update this thread a little. I've been slackin'.
Over the last 5 months or so I've been getting closer to body and paint time. The rear bumper got reinforced and tied into the cage better for towing. I gusseted the cage in a few areas. I reinforced the roof where the sunroof mounts and started getting the body a little straighter. I hung the bare body/cage assembly from the cieling in the garage and rolled it over (a few times now) to make working on the pan easier. Nearly the whole body is bare metal now. I repaired some rust on the pans and just finished making some jacking pads.
Here's a handfull of pics from the last few months.

Been waiting for some good news/updates from your project Robbie. Hope everything is going well for you. Remember that '64 bug I pm'd you about? Turns out its a '66
. The guy didn't have a clue what he had. He doesn't have the title either
. I took a look at it myself for a potential street project in the faaaaar future. Both aprons have been beat and hacked together and the right rear inner fender area has a small wrinkle, like it's been rear-ended pretty hard. It needs a hood and deck lid. The rest of the body isn't too bad. Dash is clean. Functional venting rear quarter windows, etc, etc, etc. It would be a huge project, even to Baja it. Long story slightly shorter, the guy is tired of garaging it for 6-7 years now and he's been asking me to come over with my tow-bar and take it and all it's new sheetmetal away..........for free. That's kinda hard to resist for a guy like me
Time will tell.

and that car for free sounds like a good deal!!!
Sweet! I spent over 3 months straight, 3 summers ago, doing boat work instead of bug work. Seems like just about anything jumps in front of the poor bug on the priority list. I guess that's why it's taking so long.....it seems like I can knock out just about any project from start to finish EXCEPT the baja.
Here's a couple pics of the floor repair job from HELL! '90 Supra SunSport........one of the last years with wood floors and stringers

We mostly wakeboard and tube. But the last couple years we've been doing some fishing. Not much catching, just fishing
