Damn...A lot of pics of guys looking at the back end of my baja...and the front for that matter
Got home from work and JT had the carb apart giving it a good cleaning. All he found was the same thing we have in the past. Just a little bit of very very fine dust like particulates. I am starting to think that these carbs are just very intolerant to any dust or dirt. We did do 150miles following 7 ATV's a couple weeks ago in dry dusty conditions.
Question is...is it coming in through the fuel or the air?
Put it all back together and ran it up the interstate to Easton at 3500rpm then back down the whooped out road next to the freeway at 40-45mph. Ran pretty good, a couple of small adjustments and it was very good....Go figure.

Good to hear! That fine dust over there is something else, maybe one of those cyclone style air-cleaners remote-mounted like tractors/generators use?
We've got a bizarre 34/34DMTR (not 32/36) Proggy with low miles on it if you want to try something else...It was on a 1600DP last.

Maybe its time to start thinking about another trip... dunes maybe? Moses Lake?

By the way, how much farther did you guys go after Aaron and I split?

Good work JT! I bet all your problems are debris related. That fuel filter is the same one everybody uses, so it should be OK. Lots of people off-road those carbs too, so I know they can work well in dirty environments. I'd try some kind of paper air filter as soon as you can to keep the air as clean as possible. I was constantly clogging my idle jets when I ran K&N filters years ago, with very little driving in the dirt. I've grown to hate K&N filters and other oiled, course filters...they just don't filter good enough. I've gone from a K&N in every vehicle, back to stock paper air filters in every one.CentralWAbaja wrote:Put it all back together and ran it up the interstate to Easton at 3500rpm then back down the whooped out road next to the freeway at 40-45mph. Sounds like I better get to fixin' my junk so I'm ready for the next run.

I run the K&N filters (w/outerwears) but on the top and bottom I put some grease down to seal those places. Sand is a bit courser than dirt can be but it still can get anywhere, just like a mouse. The grease does help. Also, if you have tin vs. a cast bottom and top, over tightening (like almost everyone does) can create highs and lows for crap and corruption to get in. Also, the K&M elements can get old and start to sag which just makes things worse. You can oil them too much then you can have problems.
When I bought my dual Dels I was told that the one (left) carb wanted to plug all the time… which it does, but every time (so far) it has been in the air passages.

JT, You still running that air cleaner you put on in Vegas?
Do like Karl suggests and put a dry paper filter in it and I think you will solve your problems. I used to run an old two stage that looked like that, except it had a second oiled foam filter on the inside. That worked well. The paper stopped most everything, and when it clogged up with silt, I would take it off and tap it against a rock. Any dirt that migrated to the inside of the paper was caught by the foam that almost never needed cleaning.

Well, ok. I hope you end up with some sort of off-road VW. They are too much fun to live without! By the way, I though your car was really kickass. Yes, baja the rest of 'em!
Hey Karl, next trip can I get a ride! please... Never been in a nice, fast, quiet baja before!

Paper filter you say?
Well Leatherneck gave me this one in Vegas.....Found it on the Mint 400 race course on the morning after. I think it came off a real race car!
You suppose it will work?

Re: I-90 Exit38 to Exit74 The Dirt Road Version
I am totally with you guys as far as going to a paper filter.
A little confusion when ordering on this one, as I thought I was getting a paper and foam combo.
The strange thing is that there really isn't much dust or dirt in the filter housing or the top of the carb. So it's not really showing obvious sings of filter failure.
So what about throttle shaft slop? Could it be sucking in there? Seems to be running to well when it's good, to be sucking through holes it shouldn't be? I don't know just asking?
I've pulled carbs off of stuff that was running rough to find dirt plugging jets and things before (Bikes, quads, lawnmower, generators) It has always taking some pretty good size crap to bring those down. It just seems like this thing is being brought to its knees, multiple times now, by a little dust. Heck the oil/gauze style chrome jobber that we tried to run last year came off this car back in the day, with thousands and thousands of dirt road miles on a 30pict-1 and an 1835sp never had issued like this then?

Re: I-90 Exit38 to Exit74 The Dirt Road Version
My other toy, is getting an upgrade:

Trying to run a Type I CV at either end of an axle with a heavy swaybar attaching the controal arms to one another to keep the angularity achieveable less than that at which the CV's scatter...trying to keep the camber in control just about like a swingaxle. I ran a simple live axle setup, but the whooping on it cracked most everything and the frame was just twisting (no fish plates/gussets at joints)...so I'm trying to find a setup that will tolerate some frame treaking. Also picked up a 20HP Honda w/oil filter and alternator, a muffler for a USFS FMF ~600C~ 4-stroke quad as well - need to make a header for it once I chop the frame up the rest of the way to accomodate the 2-cylinder.

This one is a gauze filter? It's the one that came with the filter? If so, it is no doubt a chineese filter, not a true K&N. K&N filters are bad enough, but the copies are junk. Its bound to be letting much more through than you think. Most dual webber kits come with those crap filters. Night and day difference when compared to true K&Ns. The gauze they use just itsn't fine enough. The oil tries to fill the holes in the gauze, but since the holes are too big, the vacuum sucks the oil out and lets dirt pass.CentralWAbaja wrote:I am totally with you guys as far as going to a paper filter.

Even if it was sucking dirt in around the throttle shaft, there are no jets or passaeways that the dirt could get into. It would just go down the manifold.

I think someone caught the off-road "bug" last weekendChris V wrote: If the baja sells easy I guess I may have to baja the rest of 'em![]()
There might be more to what's going on than just a little dirt getting in through the air filter and causing problems. That dirt would have to get into the small tube inside the throat of the carb that vents the float bowl for it to even be able to clog up your jets. So dirt coming in with the fuel is more likely to create a problem with the jets, but with a filter in the fuel line that seems unlikely as well. You might try putting a filter between the pump and the carb rather than just pre-pump just in case the pump is shedding a little debris for whatever reason. Another test would be to "T" into the fuel line between the pump and the carb so you could quickly see if you've got fuel pressure or not. I remember when Marc was working the throttle with the filter removed there was no accelerator pump squirt, which would suggest there wasn't any fuel in the float bowl...or the passages in/to the squirter were plugged. It's very puzzling because you've had these problems with more than one carb, fuel pump, air filter, etc. But it seems to clear up for while after each change.CentralWAbaja wrote:I've pulled carbs off of stuff that was running rough to find dirt plugging jets and things before (Bikes, quads, lawnmower, generators) It has always taking some pretty good size crap to bring those down. If you can plumb in a decent paper air filter and put a fuel filter after the pump you should able to rule out any "debris" issues. With a pressure gauge in-line you can rule out any fuel supply problems from the tank or pump. We should have been squirting a little fuel down the carb by hand at the end of the day there, just to verify it was a fuel supply problem and not ignition related at all.
Sure! I think we can work something outVolksmeister wrote:Hey Karl, next trip can I get a ride! please... Never been in a nice, fast, quiet baja before!

Totally with you Big Dave. I was planning on setting it up with a Donaldson Power Core and be done. I just haven't done it yet because if a carb choice change is in order then I would be trying to adapt to something different.
Karl are you saying to plumb something like this in line?
