My Towdster Build

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Pull it apart , put it together , sleep , and repeat

Yes it's back together again at the moment as Iguana Brad has been back over here in Oz among other things wiring a lot of the car for me

Dash is pretty well done although i think i'll drop the second skin around the speedhut guages , it was just an idea and the final one was to be cut out of alloy and polished

Wiring everywhere and being a towd space for items is fast running out , with the fuse box , 100 amp breaker , cig lighter , icom 440 uhf radio , (yes we can run UHF here in Aus) and the balast for the LED light bar

Switching for the following from left to right , Wipers , Horn , steering column , Interior light , LED light bar , Headlights with ignition underneath
Image

Remote oil filter with sensor fitted to activate thermo fan on the oil cooler

And how it currently sits in full , yep theres plenty still to do , but it's getting there finally

Well have finally got the rear guards home and fitted to the car , i just have to make some tabs up today to hold the inside edges of the bottom of the arches to the chassis to stop them bouncing around

Now hopefully the front guards arent to far of being done also and i can finally break this baby down and send it out for paint and powdercoat etc

Those rear fenders look real good, like they belong there.

Keep up the good work!

Question. Do the front wings have additional support under them besides the FG connection to the body? I'm looking at something similar on my rear fenders of my black buggy where the Model A style tail lights mount to them. I'm sure they will be bouncing around when off road and the original thickness FG is supposed support them.

Yes both my front and rear fenders have extra support brackets to stop the arches flexing and bouncing around to much .
It dosnt take to much of a bracket hidden or small to do it , you just have to be creative

The glass in my buggy is not the older thick stuff and, for some reason, hard to deal with. The builder apparently did not have or use a jig when it was assembled so the fitment was way off. Trying to fix it has been a pain mainly because I have never worked with it before so I had help from someone who has done a lot of it in marine applications; it was a test of his abilities also.

Did you glass the supports in or are they sitting out? For spreading the load out for the tail lights, I also have to deal with inner wheel well panels that were made from that lightweight for sale/real estate FG sign material. It is something like honeycomb but not nearly as strong for other than an inner closeout panel. The signboard material was popular for a while but the thin construction materials, while good for a sign, are not conducive to structural applications. Another problem to deal with.

Thanks for the reply.
