Report from the southern Oregon Dunes

The sun is out, it's in the mid-60s, the wind is up and gusty so even the Crows are pretty much staying in the 80' tall trees and the dunes are noisy!

Another sunny day but with fairly strong cool winds. Duner's were leaving in droves today and other vacationers and or duners were coming in about as fast. Long lines of traffic on HWY 101 in places. Sun and sun a clouds off and on for the next few days.

What a day: it started out with a blue sky and no wind then the wind came up and the clouds came in from the North at a very high rate of speed then disappearing but finally joining in to be an overcast afternoon. Now the rain drops are starting to mist in so it might be rain tonight.

Very quiet most of the time out on the dunes where we are closer to but there are periods of.... "What did you say... I can't hear you even when you ar shouting  .

Clear blue sky most of the day but there is also a very cool wind along with it.

The next weekend crowd is starting to come in so the noise is going up. We saw some way stupid things out there today too... someone is going to get hurt bad if it keeps up.

The weather here is weird. The wind is blowing clouds in and away with the clouds moving faster than most of the quads out on the dunes; the wind is cool also.

Right now it is very quiet out on the dunes even with the amount of rigs in the camping grounds.

We head home Monday (due to the long drive and the traffic through Portland OR and from Olympia through Portland and Seattle) but the weekend and the best part of next week here is supposed to be very windy with blowing sand. A couple of the guys in the group went out on the dunes today and the wind had blown the sand very smooth but the sand is also very soft in places due to the mass of idiots out there  .

One of the trails had been closed and blocked off due to it joining a entry to the dune trail at 90 degrees with both trails being blind to the other
and some clown was trying to erase the safety blockage. Its funny how having fun also brings out the extreme mental blindness and stupidity in people.

I got the hood of my blue buggy put back on and while the brakes now work the pedal action is not the best as there is an air bubble somewhere but not exactly sure just where it is. I think it might be just before the disc brakes but I need someone to help me bleed the system especially since the turning brakes are several inches higher than the MC and disc brakes. Right now it is a very weird brake pedal and turning brake handles as they are hard after a few inches of softness.

I did find a lot of sand in the filter the sits under the fill cap on the brake cylinder under the cap. A soft air pressure and it is perfect now except for the free pedal. Something for next trip down, with some help bleeding to fix.

Rained during the night. The weather is supposed to be windy fronts coming through for most, if all, of the next week.

There are people out on the dunes with loud toys as I write.

The wind here at the dune is in the mid-20s with gusts quite a bit higher. Even the 80' tall Spruce trees are flexing at their tops. The Spruce needles look like storm snow flakes as they are blown down... you want to keep a cover over you cups, can's or bottles so they don't fly into them (the needles are stiff and stiff and sharp when going down your gullet  ). When you drive by them the little lakes here have white caps on them.

It is supposed to be like this most of the week. July is the windiest month here from what I am hearing.

I think it was Saturday PM then again again Sunday morning there was what sounded like gun fire that sounded like it was on the dunes. I didn't count but it was enough to be at least in the 30 shots range and maybe more... both times.

A long time ago I was told by locals that this does happen as well as archery practice out on the dunes. I thought it would happen more in the late fall when hunting season is close but not at the start of summer. Be careful guys!

Down at the dunes to continue on with some work one of the other guys in the group did plus some different repair stuff.

The wind came up this AM and go really bad at different times. It is still up at dinner time.

There were some noisy guys/girls out there but it sounds like they were having fun... plus getting sand blasted   .

Not sure how long down but no goofing off out on the dunes.

Had a wind and rain storm blow through last night. The wind was high enough to knock some of the tree limbs down and they banged off the roof :o  . The trees here range up to roughly 80 feet in height so the bang from even a small limb, with small branches that slow down the fall, can get pretty loud. I think there is another storm coming in in a day or two then the weather will get back to "nice" with a lot of sun showing.

Pretty quiet on the dunes right now and I would suspect that the sand is pretty wet.

There is supposed to be more heavy rain tonight and maybe tomorrow so if you decide to ride the dunes here... check the weather reports first.

Also there has been heavy rain up the coast to, and into British Columbia but not sure what is going on there tomorrow.

It rained so hard during the night that mud was splashed 3 to 4 feet up on the sides of buildings in places. Got some more work to do before we can go home though. One of those upkeep trips you have to make every-so-often  . Still have a bit more to do.

The sun was out today and things were quiet all day long and a lot of people left the area but more came into.

The weather has been good for the last couple days (and some very loud rigs on the dunes) but at the same time the mornings are cooler. There is supposedly a storm front coming in in the next couple of days with rain coming in in the next couple of days.

We had a heavy fog this AM so fall is here I guess. The blue sky is still a bit hazy but it seems to be burning off now. Check the weather forecast is something I recommend before coming down.
