I fail to see what the problem is. I thought the purpose of running engines on a dyno was to see how much power you could make?turbo_bob wrote:Larger bore, equals larger valves, equals more H/P.

But in this case they're supposed to be street engines. No, wait - apparently that's no longer a criterion...but they have to run on 91 octane (presumably that means (R+M)/2=91) and have "a muffler" (whatever that means).
That's the problem with this whole exercise, the purpose (other than to fill pages) is unclear.

Marc, this is a nice muffler, it retails for about $12.Marc wrote:----------

I think it would look best drapped longitudally across the carbs......

Actually I was thinking of something more like this:

Seriously, though, with no dB limit what defines a muffler? A giant fart-can would be acceptable, but presumably a stinger with an insert would be disqualified? Is someone actually going to tear these engines down to verify that all the internal components meet the requirements, or is this going to be done on the Honor System?

Yea, the honor system isn't so honorable these days. If you don't put a limit on anything other than how it's supposed to perform, then there won't be any "cheaters".
But, at least something is going on, and I/we do thank Chico for doing that. I just hope it gets billed to the public correctly. I wouldn't call it a "street engine" contest or whatever for sure, because there are too many holes in the rules that just don't show the engine being truley driveable on the street.
I'm just in the business where people will take ANYTHING you say and make it completley literal no matter what. So you absolutley must be careful with your wording so nobody mistakenly gets mislead and everything is very, very clear. That's the only reason for my input on this matter. I just don't want to see Chico go through all this work and have things worded in a way people take wrong and get a bunch of backlash and critisizm. Take for example the VWTrends MSD article. Nothing but good intentions on getting some info out there, and that blew up in thier face with critisizm. More than was called for IMHO, but they got it none the less.

Yes i agree that it is a good thing that somebody takes an initiative. But it is too cramped up for a street engine contest.
- You cannot determine whether an engine is streetable or not, when you need to test 8-10 engines in one day on the dyno. It takes way more than that. So youre/were down to the word of the builder, and our own common sence.
A sustained XX hp load for say 30 min. could and would have made a lot more data visible.
Lets hope it gets into an annual or bi annual event. And ruling gets more specific by that time.
Like I menthioned earlier, take a look at how engine Masters do their tests. And then take the best of that, combine it with what we want/need to know, and you will get one helluva good test.
just my 02 c.
