Re: Mid engine fun
The subie argument is quite valid. I had even considered it before (better gear ratios).
So....
I have been on hold with spending the money.
Shopping and waiting for the right thing to come along.
It would be nice if a subie trans showed up within a 4hr driving distance of me. Shipping kills the deal. Also would have to know and research the numbers to be sure of the ratios.
If something does not show up after a while longer.....I will probably make the 4 hr drive to get the 901.

Re: Mid engine fun
The project is well underway.
Ball joint front all rebuilt....ball joints, ECT.
Drop spindles and disc brakes.
Had to bend the top arms to get alignment.
Got shocks with the stock type bump stops.
Also a 19mm sway bar.

Using a pan head as a starting point.
Sliced it open and put more castor in it.

Re: Mid engine fun
I have not had much time lately so I have not gotten any further on the chassis.
But I have whittled some parts a few minutes at a time here and there.
Flywheel is made.
Mazda 228mm pressure plate.
Type 1 ring.
Type 5 disc and throw out bearing.
Modified the 901 fork.
And made a new collar to fit the larger type 5 throw out.

Adapted a TDI starter onto the 901.
Much like the go westy adapter....but all my stuff is at an odd depth.
I think I got all the numbers right....it seems to fit.

Re: Mid engine fun
Got the 28mm rear springs, but the are not in it yet.
And went ahead and got the rear disc brakes also.
Of course I had to drill/ stud them and add a concentric ring....all to match my Japanese wheels.

Re: Mid engine fun
I thought I had it close.....but now as I am approaching final location of the body (significant body drop) the hood is hitting the set screw on the top of stearing box.
I might just hafta make a bubble bulge there....or just cut a hole and let the box stick out the hood.
I have a huge amount of fiberglass work to do anyway.

Re: Mid engine fun
I assume you are talking about the ratchet strap.
Always working by myself......something has to hold parts.
This center section is not the actual frame. The frame will be mostly tubing.
But this is the duct way for all the linkages and such.
It is tack welded in place and the front and rear sub frames are lined up and it is on its wheels.....it's a roller now.
I am trying to get back on the big work.....bending pipe and making the ladders down the sides.
