So no adapter needed? Is the throw the same? I see some of these adapter but they look 1/2" + thick.

The "automatic" 9 tooth TDi/VR6 starter needs no adapter, just a few minutes with a rattail file to adjust the second bolt hole to line up.
The longer snout manual trans version needs the thick adapter to work on a 091 trans, and I am not sure it will work on a t1 trans.
The required strokes overlap to some extent, is something you can check given a spare trans.

Ok , got my starter and it looks like a really nice part. I saw somewhere that there was a pigtail you could buy. Anyone have a link or p/n ?

IIRC (maybe) vanagons, mk3s and mk4s had the plug, perhaps even mk5++
(Volkswagen tends to keep using designs that work for some reason)
...but you can jack the existing female 1/4" spade onto it.
(yes, its a locking spade connector... may even be waterproof. I wish you could get both sides...)
You will want to fit that hole on a spare trans if at all possible.
I think i used a chainsaw file, but I have slept since then.
Off topic, My 40x40x16 red iron framed shop is finally getting erected.

That starter doesn't work for me

Hits my gas tank. Guess everyone has put these in beetles. I have pics I'll post up later of my mods. Sure is a noisy one.

Spins a diesel over at -40... Have one in my square for years (now in vanagon, new one going back into square)
What hits? Starters not abnormally long or anything, smaller than most, permanent magnet and sun gears for gear reduction...
Solenoid orientation?

It's in and works great. If you hold the two side by side you'll see the mounting tabs are not in the same spot. Great for a car with no gas tank platform in the way etc. And if I was to spin it 180° the solenoid would hit the swing axle.

Cool, Im delighted you were able to get it working, even though it required heroics, I suspect you will find it to be worth the effort...
It spins my humble 10.5:1 CR 3.6L subaru well over 300rpm...

I think I'm going to pursue that pigtail. So far so good but would like to know it always has that clip as security.
