Don't trust the spacers with the Mallory. Rule of thumb, they are off a few degrees. That aside, you really need two spacers to be consistant. You'll notice that after you tighten the screw down (after setting gap) the other slot is tighter than the one you just set. This is because the two plates don't spin concentrically, they have some slop in them. Always check it with a timing light after setting and adjust as needed. --Ryan

Yup. Lesson learned. I am still at about 12 degrees advance, so going from 8 to 20. John recommended 10 initial, but I can't do that. I think the vacuum advance is kicking in and causing it to ping early on. I put it back to about 8 at 1000 rpm and all is well. I am going to find my full advance when I do the dyno. Then I will play with the curves from there with the springs to change the advance rate from 8 to max. I think max will probably be close to about 24, like John and Jake have seen.
I figure I can get about 6-8 good pulls in my allotted hour.

Now, in second gear, the tires are skipping all the way through the power band, until about 4000 rpm and then they totally break loose until I let off for fear, at about 6500. The faster the revs the harder it pulls. It's unreal.
Lol, fun isnt it? My car will do that when the boost kicks in.

Yeah, its fun all right.
Today I prepared to have my Kafer Cup Brace installed. I mocked it and found that I will not have any problems with interference from the exhaust. There is a local guy that has a VW shop with a bunch of rear frame assemblies sitting around. He's gonna weld it up on one of those as a jig for me, since it makes it easier to make good welds. Should have it all in tomorrow, and maybe I'll have the intermediate mount done tomorrow too.
After that, it's video time! Just gotta figure out how I want to mount the camera in the car. I will have to make something that will hold it pretty firm.

So you gonna take a stab at the HP output at the rear wheels?mharney wrote:That would be me.
But it will pay off - I am sure of it.
Don, looks like next week on dyno. Still have to get welding done and some other little stuff.
Remember, the HP will come from the cam, heads, fuel delivery and crank....
The squishies only allow you to run outragious CR, not make any more HP than you would at 9:1 cr........
Did I do that? Did I just open THAT can of worms............

The squishies will give a different torque curve too and keep the heat down.
Any time you can increase the compression and keep control of the event, you will have an increase in power. It's just physics.
Remember I am running 300 degree head temps on the highway, with non-vented decklid, and no standoffs.
I don't want to guess. I'm skeered.

See, you could have went to 13.5:1!mharney wrote:-------------

I know the advantages of squishies firsthand.
Remember I talked to the *inventor* of them ABOUT that theory,
in 1976, when he was racing a hemi FORD and I was racing a SCJ
Mercury......
I wuz jes trying to see if I could get the page count up for this thread......
BUWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

Don,
the inventor of the pistons wouldn't touch a "hemi" style design with a 10 foot pole. All quench, and no squish.
And the other thing is, sure he could have gone with a higher CR. But fitting the parts together is hard. valve to piston clearance is very, very close. Even with our conservative valve timing. I'm running less than .060" intake valve to dome clearance w/ 114 lc -4 86B.

You are right, he quit racing the Ford hemi when he realized where the REAL power was!Steve Arndt wrote:Don,

AND when the Ford sponsorship $$ went away.

Ok, KCB is in, and I just took it for a ride. I found a stretch of high way (LONG overpass about a half mile long that transitions from one highway to another, pretty straight and level) and stopped. Traffic was non-existent, so I took the opportunity and gave it hell.
A little wheel hop off the line, nothing bad.. just a few little hops... probably the torsion housing bushings and/or the swing arm bushings.
My new tires (185 65 15) are a little shorter than the 165s were. I am thinking I shoulda got the 195 65 15's. Traction was a lot better.
Hitting second gear I got a bit of spin, but nothing like what I had. It hooked up about half way through second, and stayed hooked up since I didn't dump hard on 3rd. I never made it to 4th until I was ready to let off.
Around 85 MPH in third, I ran out of fuel! My carter rotary was probably not to blame, but rather my original fuel line. I suspect if I switch out for a 3/8" line, I'll be ok.
Feels a little weak up top. I suspect I am leaning out but I will have to ger a reading off my wideband to be sure. 160's with 200 airs on F2 tubes with 40 mm vents on 48 IDFs.
Still a damn lot of fun. Had to deal with a guy in a Z71 that just didn't wanna be behind me on the way home. He had to deal with it until I let him around me due to speed. I don't like to do that crazy street racing gig. You can make your point and still be pretty safe staying around the speed limit. He didn't like it much. Fun.
