Very cool. I was just thinking why no one ever made overhead cam Type 1's and so i googled it and what do you know i should have just used search button on here... LOL
Anyone still make these? I see reference to adapting porsche heads. How difficult is that to do? Feasible for someone with access to a machine shop to handle? I think with these heads and water jackets in the heads/cylinders this could possibly be the ultimate flat engine...

Well, well....a set of 4 911 heads do not need porting and floww like bat out of hell.
In UK Russ Fellows did not even buy new cams but re-used original 911, cut them, re-index and that was it. Never failed.
He ran them on the street and strip.
To be really honest, I think I could build a new 911 headed engine with good used parts at a very low price compared to a set of used T1 or TIV parts.
Now the time spent in the machine shop, a LOT more.

I'm interested too in this setup.
Costs have come down on smaller CNC machines and lathes for the weekend DIYer while information on the interwebs has gone up dramatically. Why not go this route? A T1 fully dressed is about 200-250lbs. stock. A wet-sump, SOHC VW T1 engine with aluminum p+c, aluminum case or T5, machining, etc. could be done for under $3000-4000 and still weigh under 300lbs., right?

Weight is more than a T1 but very close to a TIV.
I have chosen steel plates on the side of the block halves with through 12.9 bolts. (a bit more weight) This stabilises the engine in a very good manner.
Plus, if there is anything I would not recommned is to stay with wetsump. No go.
With the increased hp you get, be safe, G's increase and this engine is more sensitive to stable, non foaming oil quality.
Now the tank can be located either in the back seat location or up front combined with a cooler, if a good tube/hose setup is done.

Great thanks, will take a look. Would be for my '66 bus. No hard cornering involved.
