I think all the new cam blanks are "chilled Iron" Thats why they are harder. I guess. who the heck knows? All I know is the new Scat lifters don't seem to have problems anymore ...thank god. And the same old crappy Engle cams I've always used (chilled or not) work fine with them.
In my opinoin if they would have left every thing the same (cams, lifters and oil) everything would still be fine and there would be no "Flat cam" problem.
Oh and also it would be nice if Scat never made a lifter at all because I think their old lifters contributed greatly to the flat cam phenomenon.
GETTING THE "cam" SHAFT from VW munufactures.

I have built (and taken apart) many motors over the years. I have seen Old used cams with old used lifters thrown together and last with no problem. I have seen new cams with new lifters fail in short order. I don't seem to have any luck with Scat's lifters. I love all their other products, but I will not use thier lifters.
My race motor has Scat Lube-a-lobes in it with about 3K mi. and over 200 passes. Tear down showed them to be pitting, but not that bad and the lift is still there so it will stay for now.
Webcam/lifters always look beautiful on teardowns. I have a hard time believing they are just re-packaged Scat lifters. Night and day difference in my book of experience.
Here's an interesting story: I have a spare STF motor that I threw together several years ago. I put a good used Engle 125 cam with a mix of lifters. Most were Brazilian "Premium" brand, a few were good used Scats. All the parts were used and lifters still had proper "crown" in them. Tear down showed the Scats to be pitting, the others are fine. I'd consider this to be a pretty difinitive test that the lifters are the problem...

I talked to Debbie @ Webcam several months ago, as well as a few others "in the know", and Web lifters are indeed Scats.Tom Simpson wrote:Webcam/lifters always look beautiful on teardowns. I have a hard time believing they are just re-packaged Scat lifters.
Good story Tom, but for every one like it theres gonna be another from someone else that contradicts it--- such as mine, posted earlier on this thread.Tom Simpson wrote:Here's an interesting story: I have a spare STF motor that I threw together several years ago.
