High speed cruising is the type 4's specialty!!
The German countryside is filled with the sounds of big type 4's cruising at sustained speeds equal to, and exceeding 100 MPH..
I have had type 4 engines, with stock trannies, get over 100, but was winding pretty hard...A gear change gets better MPG, and more speed, while using the type 4 torque, to aid with acceleration..
Cruising with a type 4, is great...smooth, and the sound is unobtainable with a type 1....

What is so great about a Type IV Engine?
Personal type one history:
My first car was a 73 Beetle on a 70 pan with a 1600 single port(bone stock). That car would run 90-95 MPH for extended periods of time without trouble. Good first gear burn outs, second gear squeel, and third gear chirp. This can be confirmed with at least two other sources I know of. I owned the car for two years and replaced the generator, and changed the oil. It made several trips from OH to NC with two other friends and gear making 70mph over the Smokies. While I was in the NC with the Army my mother sold the car (which pains me to this day) as I had bought a new BroncoII. I managed to get the engine back and gave it to my father for his rail. He rebuilt the heads with new guides and a valve job and ran it until lack of maintenance disabled his buggy. Late last year I purchased a rail that needed an engine.... got the 1600 single from my dad. Replaced the points, plug, rotor button, cap, wires, voltage regulator (old one died of exposure as it was parked out side for 8-10 years) and have been driving it since. (limited usage of course, no fun in the rain, or snow) Still going...... My buddy from home said you need to build that engine up to a 1835 or a
etc etc.... not even a chance.... I like turn key. While y'all are out surfin check out my cousin's performance page. lots of neet go faster stuff. His name is Brian Drew. www.go-drews.com sorry so long....

You need about 20 more hp in a T4 to compare it to a T1 I guess but there are T4s out there that produce 230hp and the number will increase as soon as the problem with the T4 heads is solved with a new design that a German (French) tuner has in the works and testing right now. The estimated hp with those heads is a 100hp per 1 liter displacement.</B><HR></BLOCKQUOTE>
