Just a quick non-update, I had to step away from this engine build for the foreseeable future while I chase down a non-acvw project. I didn't want to just disappear with this thread unresolved, so I promise to conclude it in the future when other things I have going get resolved. And I will lurk often.
Biting off more than I can chew as a way of life.

I know how it is, stuff happens, i live there...

I have a squareback getting a fresh 090 trans, a 914 that needs paint/bodywork and everything else, and a vanagon with a 3.6l hanging out back that needs some header mods and the ms3 installed to run it, along with keeping the mk1 , tdi, and designated garbage hauler f350 7.3l idi running.
...At least I finally have a nice flat chunk of concrete and shop to work in.

reading back thru the thread... "36 idf 44"s are 44idfs with 36mm venturi, or at least thats what my sons Spanish 44idfs said.
My Italian 44s don't tell...but I ran them on a stock 914 motor and they worked great, jetting was just a little odd.
A set of calipers will remove all doubt.

If I ever put them back on they will not be metering fuel, just air.
...so over dealing with carbs...
I drive 90 miles a day, so I appreciate a well tuned EMS setup. Its like having a real car.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.
