What cht gauge is that Marc?

Just some inexpensive stuff I found on eBay, but it's surprisingly accurate (much better than VDO temp gauges IMO). 10' sensor leads might be a little short in a car, but they're ample for my mid-engine configuration.
I have a center console in my Beetle, I'm thinking of getting another gauge and mounting it there (the leads should be long enough for that).

Here's some photos. After idling for 10 minutes (66°F ambient), head temp was 157° (oil 121°). After switching off and sitting for 3 minutes without cooling, those came up to 226°/132°...but as I said before, the head temp never got that high on the road, even at 80MPH/100° ambient through Wyoming.

The little toggle switch to the right of the gauge selects which sender is online: up=#4 sparkplug, down=dipstick

I thought about a similar setup but hadn't seen the dipstick sensor, does that fit in the dipstick tube nicely yh? Is it long enough?

You can get that style of sensor (in any TC type) up to about 1 meter long commonly available.
You can probably get them any length probe you want given the $.
If you need longer wires, use the same TC wire and you can have no worries at the run lengths we are needing.
(match both wires like<>like)
Twist the each of the same wires together and put into one end of a sealed crimp.
(one for each leg)
The crimp will not form a second TC, its not really part of the "circuit" and the wires are the same material.

Wire nuts work fine too. They make waterproof ones if needed.

Any word on the 36hp insert? Really need one of these and don't feel like making fins out of sheet metal and welding them in.

PROJECT UPDATE

Our racing schedule has been in the way, but the prototype fan housing has been paired with a high-rpm racing 1600.

I'll try and get some photos over the next few days.

Update

Today, as we finally got time, we fitted a 35mm fan and alternator assembly into the center mount fan housing and plastic ducting insert.

Some light grinding was required to the plastic insert to allow the fan to spin freely. This tells us to increase clearances.

We can now determine what fan belts will fit with the CB dry sump pump on the engine vs a standard pulley.

We're anxious to get this high-rpm 1.6 engine on the test mule, and start measuring temps.

What is the advantage of your approach towards the shroud versus a stock 1972 ghia shroud?

Hi Lcvaldetaro,

Theoretically, a center-mount fan delivers the most even distribution of cooling air. It was the design chosen by the factory for the Type 547 4-cam engine.

Theoretically is the key word.

This is our hands-on test to compare apples-to-apples. We'll thermocouple this baby up and see what it does compared to a good standard fan housing.

The test for the centermount is a 1.6, 7500 RPM sprint engine for HSR, highly balanced, and dry-sumped.

I understand you lived and raced in Brazil? It might interest you to know we've been designing the modernized successor to Fittapaldi's bi-motor.
