One more thing to add... I have a VDO temperature gauge. I ordered the proper sender and an adapter from summit racing. The adapter will go into the 5/8" heater line and allow me to use the vdo adapter. I could have modified the gauge adapter hole on the water manifold for the vdo sender. The issue for me is that the manifold and turbo are both in the way and it would be more work than just adding in the adapter.

That should work great with the full flow heater system you're planning Surf. To fit an NPT gauge sender to the OEM water manifold you'll have to re-tap the fitting in the manifold to NPT or get a sender with matching metric threads. Same issue with an oil pressure gauge.

Come to think about it, these suby conversions may need up to 3 water temperature senders. Gauge, ECU and radiator fan switch (if ECU doesn't control it). I'm planning to run the fan sensor directly in my radiator with "stand alone" control circuit.

Be sure to post up some pics as the installation progresses!

I have pics of the entire build so far, over on my build thread. You are correct about the senders. Since you mentioned the oil, just a side note... I'm leaving the alternator in the stock location as I hope to run A/C. As a result the oil sender area is covered by the alternator. My VW engine has a VDO dual oil sender for the pressure gauge and idiot light. It's too large to just screw in to the stock location even if the threads matched up. I found somewhere (can't remember) where a guy used some braided stainless hose with the subaru fittings on one end and the VDO sender threads on the other to connect up the sendor and also move it out of the way. (okay hijack with useful info is now done)
