Thanks a lot! 10 bucks and shipping would be much easier than my having to re invent the wheel. My goal for this week is to power up the ECU so I can check the firmware version. Once I know the firmware version, I can then find out if my ecu will support using the IAC. I have to get a USB to Com port adapter and charge the battery in the car before I can get all of this working. It's funny how the closer I think I am to the end, more little things pop up.turboedbug wrote:if you end up not using the iac and need a plate. outfront sell one for like 10 bucks and its made of aluminum and could polish up nice

I have been thinking I can drive my car week after week...... and still cant drive the car, but its getting closer. so I definently know what you mean. if your looking for a usb to serial adapter. IOGear makes one thats pretty user freindly. your IAC is not realy necessary, it helps on cold start ups for sure. but if you dont mind pedeling it to warm it up than you should be good to go.

Re: EJ20G into 67 Bug
This evening, I powered up the ecu using the battery from my wife's car and then connected up the ecu to the serial link via a ribbon cable then connected the serial link to my laptop via a TrendNet usb to com cable that I borrowed from work. The cable is a known good cable on a computer at work. When I started up the Link PClink software, it didn't detect my ECU. I made sure here was power to the link using a volt meter. I bought the ECU on ebay, used so I don't know if it's really okay and then with fact that I'm using the serial link and a couple of cables, there's lots of places that could be causing the issue. I sent an email off to FLI to see if they had any ideas. (I bought the serial link from them). Hopefully this is resolved easily. I would hate to think that I was ripped off on the ecu.

make sure you sync up your ecu to your computer using the same com port, that was an issue I had in the beginning.

Re: EJ20G into 67 Bug
Yeah, I did check that com port mismatch possibility. Also, I did some more online research last night after posting here and found that not all USB to Com adapters are the same. Some are wired up as a "null" cable some are not. The software for it is supposed to auto switch on many devices out there. So to eliminate this as a possibility, I have borrowed a laptop that has a com port on the back. I am going to use a straight serial cable and go directly to the Link ECU Serial box that plugs into the Link ECU. I plan to try this over the weekend. Once I know if the ECU checks out, then I can either look for an old laptop to use with a com port only for the car tuning or try different usb to com adapters until I find one that works.

Re: EJ20G into 67 Bug
I wish I read this a couple of hours earlier... I went to Radio shack today and bought a different usb to com adapter. Still no love. I am thinking I may box up the ecu, cables, serial adapter and send up to FLI so they can at least tell me that if the ecu is good or bad.turboedbug wrote:buy a null moded cable adapter from radio shack.....forgot to mention thats what I ended up having to do
The documentation on the ecu states that the fuel pump is supposed to click on when the ecu is powered and then stay on if the engine is started or click off if the engine does not start. So I wired up the relay for the fuel pump and it behaved as it was supposed to. So that tells me that the ECU is at least alive and working, but I just can't tune it or see the tune.

Are you also running a Link ECU? I think I was not using a null modem cable. I was thinking that I would buy one to try and see what happens.turboedbug wrote:buy a null moded cable adapter from radio shack.....forgot to mention thats what I ended up having to do

Re: EJ20G into 67 Bug
Sorry, no photo updates yet. I have been trying to get the ecu sorted out the last couple of weeks. I have been under the weather this week, missed a few days of work as a result. Unfortunately I just realized that it was December of 2004 when I decided to put a Subi into my bug. The process has definitely not gone as fast I would have hoped.Mooosman wrote:Any updated progress pics?

Re: EJ20G into 67 Bug
On Monday I ordered 5/16th fuel line from Summit Racing along with a fuel pump. By Tuesday afternoon, it was at my house and I did not pay for next day shipping, I did standard ground so it must have come from somewhere close to my part of the country.
Here are the prices and part numbers for those that are interested.
SUM-220156, Tubing, Steel, Natural, 5/16 in. x 25 ft., Each $28.95
TFS-25004, Fuel Pump, Electric, High-Flow, 85 psi, 43 gph, Single Outlet, Each $99.95
If you don't want the wiring and relay, the fuel pump can be had for $85 or so.
I'm hoping to get these installed next week.
Also still no love on the Link ECU, I am going to have to ship it to Link in LA to have them check it and the com adapter I bought.

If you have a computer with a serial port you could check it that way. Wire it to a battery next to ur PC

Yeah, I thought of that. I borrowed an older laptop from work that has a com port and tried that. Still no luck. I think that the com port adapter I just bought could be faulty.
On another note, I did some work on the car Sunday. Keep in mind the car has been sitting in the garage and not been driven or towed since 2003. I put CB Performance Disc brakes on the rear a few years ago as part of my very slow progressing project. Either way, I noticed that the rear was leaking at the wheels. I pulled the drivers side apart yesterday with the intent of replacing the seals with a new kit.
So it leaked at the paper seal and at the end of the axle tube. Before the disc conversion, it never leaked with the drums. I put new seals in and reassembled everything. I thought that there should be a paper gasket between the end of the axle tube (swing axle) and the disc caliper bracket but it would not fit. Also I put a paper gasket between the cover and the outward side of the caliper bracket. I put the O-rings and spacers in the correct places since I re-read the manual on this just to be sure. My axle seal kits came with two paper gaskets, where is the second one supposed to go? I can't remember how it would have gone on the drum setup and my book wasn't that clear.
I did only the drivers side, cleaned it up really well and will check it after a week to see if it leaks before I do the passenger side. I may have to use some sort of gasket maker if it leaks again.

Oh and for the usb/com adapter, I got one from radio shack, but like you said, I eliminated that as part of troubleshooting by using the computer with a com port.
