I'm unsure if that would really be much more efficient, but that pic was giggle-worthy

I suppose if you carved the housing down or remounted the guts it wouldn't look out of place.
Retaining the input v-belt is a feature.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

That is why I wrote Wow! It meant a lot of things......I giggled a bit too. Plus that someone in fact had used the same wild concept but in "the rough"

I found this very nice germany produced horizontal fan set-up from www.orratech.de, which I really like:

Looks very nice but I would prefer a bit more angle on the pulleys.
Maybe the picture is fooling me?
It was a common mistake some years in own built setups, to not angle the pulleys at all.
Worked fine up to maybe 4-5000 rpm but after that, belts jumps.

Looks like they have a tiny DS crank pulley driving things, all aligned well so the pulley setup they have will probably work fine.
(ideally you only want to change directions in one axis)
If you had a larger crank pulley the direction-changing pulleys would have to be spaced/angled to suit.

IIRC Joe Lociero once said here that back when he raced Corvairs they would add an additional idler--- just a scuff plate probably-- on the slack side to prevent tossing belts.

Good point, could be very correct.

Yes, very pretty, but it had better wash dishes and make great sandwiches for that sort of money.

I'm still trying to get over spending $35 on another Corvair fan...
I really need to suck it up and spend 60 on a NOS one, they get little cracks at the root of the blades.

BTW, the Corvair guys are of the opinion that the later magnesium fans fixed the belt tossing issue.
...perhaps the fix is a combination of both reduced mass and a idler to take up any slack at a critical point...

When you get a corvair fan in the mail you will swear the box is empty until you look...
