Harney's diatribe - rocker geometry to install & beyond

Do you like to go fast? Well get out of that stocker and build a hipo motor for your VW. Come here to talk with others who like to drive fast.

Jake, there is only one dyno shop here in town and they only do big trucks. :(

However, I do have a wideband, so I can use that to get close.

My bench tuning was not too far off, looks like. It's smooth, right up from about 2000 to God knows what. I'm afraid to take it past about 5000 right now, until I run the crappy gas outta the tank. I had about a gallon of year old gas that got mixed with about three gallons of 91. When I get that out and get my Wideband hooked in, I will abuse it proper. I ran it hard and lugged it a little to seat the rings.

Right about 2500 I can feel it really come on. First and second gear would have me all over the road if I stay in it. Half throttle breaks it loose in first, and about 3/4 throttle in second. I have a feeling I need to adjust the linkage too, because I don't think I am getting the carbs fully open. I might just drill a hole further up the gas pedal arm.

As I get closer to 5000 rpm, it pulls harder and harder, until I am basically afraid to stay in it. I have not had the Kafer Cup Brace and the intermediate brace put in yet, so no real abuse until I do that. Feels like my torsion bushings are in good shape though.. when it breaks loose it just spins, no shudders at all. The copperhead disk is hardcore, but only if I want it to be.

I get 30-35 in first gear in no time. Freaky.

BTW the rods are 5.5.

Gotta get tags - 2 years outta date and outta state, and it is sure to attract a lot of attention. No need for Johnny Law to pay me a visit. Hell, maybe I'll just outrun him. lol.

Video forthcoming. The problem is holding on and shifting and filming. If it were a stocker or close then it would be no problem (but then, who wants to see that?), but as fast as it ramps, there is no way I am going to free up a hand to film. I gotta mount it or get someone to hold on to it.

I have a tripod I can use for that, but no major burnouts until I get the thing tuned right, and get the Kafer Cup Brace and intermediate mount installed. The little wimpy a$$ bugpack bolt-on middle brace I used on my previous engine ain't gonna cut it. It's flexing already.

Incidentally, I have hard rubber mounts. Are they up to the task or do I need to consider a strap or other mounts? The intermediate mount is a Rocky Jennings item, with weld on rubber saddles. The center piece has to mount to the transmission like a Berg does.

Hey mharney, can you send me the pic of the engine all finished for my site??? The DTM looks good against that red surrounding..

Also, how is my balance work??? Is she smooth as glass??

That thing balanced nice and **tight**!

This is not really finished.. it's still rough, but you get the idea. I need a better way to do the springs or I might have to get some of those linkage springs airkewled sells. The wiring could be better, but this is no show car. Decklid may not fit without standoffs. We'll see tomorrow.

Yes, Jake the balance is SWEET. It is so smooth I can't feel any vibration. Let me get it cleaned up better and get a better shot before you publish.

Can't wait for tomorrow so I can go out and give it more hell.

Glad to hear that! I knew that sucker would be smooth, but damn it took some whittling on the balancer!

Think about a larger capacity breather box... Those suckers like you have fill up fast and don't do much good at high RPM...

I love the one that CSP sells... Its a 1.8L stainless unit that fits sweetly with the DTM..

Great read by the way, I have just gone through a similar experience, building my engine. Its a long hard road, but boy is it ever worth it!

That's not rust.. its some sort of crap over the metal.

There's virtually NO rust on this car. The pan is PRIMO.
