My syncro transaxles get up to 180F case temperatures during normal highway driving. They stay cool when tooling around off road. It is sustained high rpm that makes them get hot.

Most of the time its the visco that is getting hot. Tire size differemce???

The whole thing gets hot, it is loaded with friction. Ever try to push a syncro on flat ground?

Re: De Konjel
I had several syncro's. When all tires have te same diameter there is no friction in the front diff.
The front diff is the same as the rear diff. Only difference is the visco.
When all tires are the same there is no rpm difference so no friction.
The weak point in this system is that when you have different wear of tires or changed only new tires front of rear you get a visco thats works constandly. The visco wil get hot!!

Re: De Konjel
When the syncro is on a hoist with all four wheels off the ground the amount of friction is still very high, that is where the heat comes from. Turning eight CV joints instead of four is part of it, double the amount of bearings, drag from fluid in two diffs, etc.
That is why people add diff coolers.
Even with a decoupler (taking VC out of equation) they still roll with more resistance than most vehicles.

Re:
I would love to have more info on this piece if possible.
I'm trying to adapt a 4.2 Audi V8 to a porsche drivetrain, the bell housing I have is from an early 924 turbo, and and only aligns in 2 bolt holes.
this piece would solve a bunch of my woes.

but Finally after almost a year searching I have my bell housing to bolt my Audi V6 to the T3 Vanagon gearbox
. Its brand new and got it from a locall VW dealer in Wonderboom, South Africa
.
The search went from my locall VW dealer in The netherlands, the import company of VW in the Netherlands, the VW factory in Wolfburg, Germany, then Steyr in Austria, the VW factory in South Africa, and finally the VW dealer in Wonderboom, South Africa.

Re: De Konjel
ViolentBlue here is what I know about that is the Vanagon South African Bell housing, When VW of South Africa took over Production of the Vanagon they retired the odd Wasserboxer and started installing the more powerful and common VW 5 cylinder gas engine into the T3 Vanagon Chassis in order to mate it up properly they also cast this bell housing it is commonly refereed to as the South African bell housing and unfortunately is getting to be a rare piece to find these days. one side is the common VW bolt patern for the engine the other is the common bolt patter for the 091 vw van gearbox. this is all from memory sorry about no part numbers and I could be wrong as well. unfortunately TOS Vanagon forum where you asked the question is a better place to find answers search for the Limey thread over there and read through all 3 of SyncroGhia's build threads as there is a lot more information about what you are looking for.
I wish there were updates to this thread I got really excited when it popped to the top of the list.
