I've been thinking about getting one of those extraction contraptions for my baja, but haven't pulled the plug on that yet.
Is that a 5000 lb unit? And are you mounting it permanently or setting it up for a hitch mount so you can use it on the front and rear of the baja?

Looks like a nice unit by the way.

It is a 6000 lb with a synthetic rope/cable. I am welding a mount plate to the front bumper that it will bolt to.

I got the winch mount welded up and painted today. This cross tube on the front bumper has been used many times to pull my car out of awkward places, and has never moved. I used two 3/16" thick tabs below that are welded on, then used two holes in the mount plate for rosette welds on top of the tube.

All back together and ready for the next dirt test. With the heavier upper springs and the increase in pressure on the air bumps, it didn't hit the stops landing from some minor air (all four off the ground, but only a couple inches). Springs went from 350 to 400 lbs, and air bumps from 200 to 300 psi.

Looks bad ass. Baja's have always been my favorite. I see you have a ipad. I have about the same set up and also use a obd2 wifi unit. It shoots all the engine data to the pad. Can clear codes in the middle of nowhere. You may already have it. They work real nice. Pad just uses an app and the wifi adapter is pretty cheap.

The iPad is a new addition and still trying to learn how to navigate all the settings. I am an Android guy. I do not have a cell plan for it, but subscribed to the On-x Offroad app. I am finding this app does not work very smoothly, and it doesn't show the current mph (has a display for it, just shows "0" all the time). So the final decision on whether or not it stays hasn't been made yet. I need at least a couple long off road trips first.

So how is your Baja doing now Skid?

There's a new Baja Bug guy on Samba who lives in Gardnerville. Would it be OK if I refer him to you?

Sorry, Dusty! I haven't been on here much lately. The car is fine, but too cold up here to run around in a 'vert!! I may already know him. Can you describe his car? Go ahead and refer him to me. The more people I can ride with (in the summer!) the better.

Gray is SO popular and trendy on Honda Civics, Toyota Tacomas, Lexus, etc., etc. That's why I suggested it to Skid a decade ago or so. It's the color my Baja was supposed to be when I painted it in '08, and was the planned color for it back in the mid 1970s when I made it into a Baja. Some knucklehead in a paint supply store screwed up the custom mix and it wound up almost off-white. Guess Skid and me were way ahead of the trendy folks. But then, I know these guys who have these VW Things, sorta, one is 1940s green, the other is halloweenish lately...

Get a string started as it is looking more interesting with each time I see pix. Again, I did some editing, I can see the K&L front suspension now and I can see the bridging a bit better here.

Last summer I converted the rear suspension to coil over, after the torsion housing failed. This summer I put in a new beam and rebuilt the front suspension and spindles. Today I found/heard a noise coming from the motor. Yup, the motor is losing a bearing. Since my memory isn't what it used to be, I had to look a ways back in this thread to see when I rebuilt this motor. Feb. 2012. I got 10-1/2 years out of it. I believe it got about 11 - 12,000 miles, 90% of them in the dirt. Can't blame the Suby motor or reliability on this one. I messed up and let the oil level get too low. Yeah, my fault for being an idiot on this one. Unfortunately for the baja, I already have a full winter and then some lined up for this winter. I find I work much slower in retirement. Time will tell when she gets back on the trail. After the last two summer's work there isn't a whole lot left to rebuild. Except the trans. I am certain that piece is getting a bit jealous right about now...
