Joxracing's 1966 Baja "The Resurection"

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Jox... As Dusty said don't forget the o-ring in the flywheel. It is very frustrating if you do one and not the other and you still have a leak.

Yes I know this from personal experience
Collecting parts again... No I'm not going to say why!

And yes, its the baja with the leak, fords never leak
The impact is a a quicker and easier way, but if you don't have that capability...
The drawback to using the impact is that you cannot accurately torque the gland nut. It's easy to break them if you overtorque. Undertorque and it can come loose, wobble, and destroy the end of the crank and the center of the flywheel.

A better way is to use a torque multiplier tool with a torque wrench.

Wipe a little grease on the seal lip before installing the flywheel, and a little inside the pilot bearing in the gland nut before installing the clutch.

Hahaha yess.... she doesnt leak!!!! :o

(lets hope it stays that way)

A couple friends came over at about 4, droped the motor, put the new seal on, fitted the engine cage, and wired the lights up.

We were riding around in it by 8 o'clock.

For about 10 min we gave it a shake down on some offroad trail we found down the street, and came home, and realized we lost a part of the exhuast and a light cage, so we were fixing that up...

And my mom came out and she said that one of the neighbors called complaing, and the cops might be coming shortly., so we had to put it away...

But im seriously pissed off, because those ranger sideXside's, dirtbikes and 4wheelers drive around all day, and dont get called on nothing.

When my dad got home, he called the neighbor(which has a loud dirtbike and a ranger) and gave him a good earful...

But i cannot drive the baja around anymore :x

Now i have to be the prick, and im gonna call on every ranger and Dirtbike that rides by.

But... the important thing is..... IT RUNS AWESOME!!! :D

Hang in there Joxracing. Neibors can be a real pain.
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

September. But my parents DO NOT want to plate the bug. I might be able to persuade them though.

Have them call the insurance company and ask for a quote on it. That will help. Hope you're a good student. You're gonna need all the discounts you can get.

Alright, i got a few oil leaks, hardly anything to worry about.....right?

Image

And when i hardly rev it, it sounds good, but when ya rev it a little bit, it sounds like its got a knock to it.

I really hope its not a rod knock, what are some charecterstics of a rod knock?

Oh, and are those oil leaks nothing, or should i pay attention to them?

Always want to pay attention to oil leaks, at least I do. I hate leaving a trail. As for the Knock, rev the engine until you can hear the knock clearly, then pull 1 spark plug wire at a time off of the distrubutor. If the knock goes away of diminishes with a wire pulled the knock is most likely a rod and whatever wire is pulled is the cylinder in question. If the knock stays there, it is something else, maybe a Main bearing. If it is more of a tapping and doesn't go away it may just be a valve adjustment.

Ill have to try that...

I dont think it would be lifter knock..

It depends, sometimes its really bad when i first start it up, then kinda goes away...

But its NOT a steady knock thats always knocking from idle to high rev.

Non steady, fluttering knocks are usually Main bearings. Although, it could also be the fuel pump rod, you can start the engine, let it idle for a minute to fill the carb, then pull the fuel pump off and the rod out. Then start the engine and see if the noise is gone. if not the it is deeper.
