CopperBaja's Baja

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Thanks!
No more work to yours lately?

More progress!

Mounted the front bumper (correctly) last Sunday. I need to hit it with a coat of Rustoleum.

Today I got a bit of work done as well.....mounted my battery box. I decided to put for bolts 1" in on each corner and I used a battery hold down kit from Autozone with 2 eyebolts on each side of the battery.

I had to get a longer + cable. It was only 32"...I upp'd it to 38". The only thing I have left is to figure out how to strap they lid shut.... :?
I have a piece of nylon strap that came with it, but no directions.....I'll figure something out.

hey man....just s suggestion. I would trim that front bumper back about 4 inches. it will put it in closer to the front of the car, and IMO it looks better. I have the same exact bumper on my car. and i trimmed 4 inches off it. i will take some pics if you want.

And yea man i have some progress. im about to mount a soild tranny mount front and back plus a mid. I bought it last week at a swap for 20$. So i think that i got a good deal. I have been doing some minor stuff getting the baja ready for next weekend. Going to do some trail riding in the withlacoochee state forest. I will take some pics when im done.

I'm going to leave it as is...trying to get a thing beam. Maybe fix things after Rasor Rd.

Nice! With urethane mounts? I'll probably do one of those too. Not sure how soon. ...will look forward to the pics! :D

Nope no urethane mounts. Just a solid mount. Its gonna mke the ride a bit rougher from what i hear, but it is alot stronger.

We celebrated our Easter today, so I got a bit more done today....nothing important enough to take pics..... (ok...I forgot and it got dark... )

I installed the factory seatbelts (for now) and installed the strap that came with the battery case. Stupid thing broke when I tightened it....it's plastic...I need to find a metal alternative.

Did a tad bit of wiring as well. I have alot of little things that need done.

Good news! I'm picking up a Thing beam on Tuesday!!! :D

HAPPY EASTER!!! Here's an Easter Egg for y'all!!!

Thanks! Glad to know he hasn't lost his cuteness factor with the ladies! ;)

He's a little comedian...always doing stuff to make you smile.

Having a tough time with bleeding the brakes. I had the reservoir off during the rebuild and am trying to get the pressure back into the lines.

The fronts will bleed just fine, but the rears won't get any fluid....or air coming out of them when the pedal is pressed.

Bad Master Cylinder???

i would fill the the res up and then open the bleeders on the back 2 tires and let gravity takes its course. Leave them open all night and it will pretty much bleed themselves. Or atleast get the lines full again.

Thanks.
Yes, dual cyl. I think I figured it out....

After a bit of frustration and a workout for my wife's leg...
I decided to go back to the M/C, crossed my fingers, and pulled the brake line for the rear brakes.

A "pffft" sound and dust came out, then some fluid....as my wife pressed on the pedal, I tightened it back and bled the brakes.

I think they're good now. I have to road-test it.

My next post will be concerning tuning the motor. My RPM gauge was jumping all over the place and now won't even register anything....I'm hoping it was just a bad weekend.

I'm back in school this week, so more work to come next weekend.

So I got a bit done this weekend....nothing really to write home about.

-Valves adjusted
-Oil change and screen cleaned <---no more drips in the driveway!
-Trying to tune the carb, cause I'm getting bad hesitation under 3k RPM.

Basically it will idle, but the tach jumps btwn 500-1k constantly. Then when I stop and go to take off, I have to run it up to about 3k to get it to move without stalling out.

I've read about the 34pict3 and it's headbutting with the 009. I seem to think that it is my problem.

I've modded the butterfly according to this writeup:
http://www.aircooledtech.com/34pict3_modification/

They say I need to increase my main jet from 127.5 to 130 to get rid of the hesitation. My local VW shop says that they don't make a 130 and that I need to find a shop that works on carbs to do this. I think he called it a "jet reaming kit"???

Any suggestions?

My 2nd thought is just to get a single 40 weber, but with property taxes due this month (and the fact that I want to raise my front end) I don't see it happening....besides...I don't see any for sale on Craigs.

TODO before Rasor Rd.
1) Figure out this damn air/fuel issue
2) Check for (and install?) sand seal
3) Buy 2-stage air filter.

yes from what I have read you need to find or find somebody who has a reamer and gauge to open it up some. What air filter are you using now? A press in seal is not hard nor takes alot other then set up time to do.
