Do you like to go fast? Well get out of that stocker and build a hipo motor for your VW. Come here to talk with others who like to drive fast.

The run-in will be videotaped. :)

I thought about doing it live. I would need someone to host the feed that has bandwidth and is willing to run Media Server, but that's a hassle, so I may just tape it and make a video to download.

Actually, I was thinking more along the lines of: what can we learn from this? The point I was trying to make was that if you check the heads with rockers on the bench, you can focus on just the rocker/valve geo and nothing else. I don't know about others, but when I get to the point of bolting on the heads, I want it to run! That geo can be checked while the case is out getting machined, and issues like machining of rocker stands can be taken care of ahead of time, with less surprises.

Yeah, I see what you mean.. It's no matter to me though, since you still have to measure for pushrods when its all over. I don't mind taking them off a couple times before I get done. Bolting the heads on only takes me about 15 minutes. But on the bench, you have a little more comfortable workspace which could make it worth doing next time. I got a bus engine coming up soon, and will have to do geometry on it as well, so I may well just try that.

Don, I will check it out.

JOY!! My linkage has been sitting in a box all weekend. It showed up Friday night just as I was leaving to go out of town. I just now opened it, and what do I have? Linkage for offset manifolds. What do I need? Linkage for straight manifolds. *sigh*

Engine start pushed back another F*CKING week.

Man that sucks.Who did ya order it from? They not understand what ya needed.I wish ya would just bite the bullet and get the CB Linkage/Aircleaner Kit they make for straight manifolds. It so much better then the stamped out steel stuff. :?

Re: Ordering CB linkage... Well, I did just that.. last night.

Serrano was where I ordered from. I guess he didn't read what I wrote very well. Life goes on I guess.

I guess I could start it without the linkage, but I can't really play with the throttle at all, which I need to be able to do to vary the rpms. I can wait.

CB PART# 6480 x 1 kit fits straight manifolds IDF
CB PART# 3300 x 2 air cleaner tops IDF
CB PART# 3381 X 2 mounting hardware 3 1/4 tall
+
you may have to get a larger or smaller cross bar than the one that comes with the kit. I did, my engine is slim
they cost about 11 bucks

I also had to grind down my roller pedal's forward stop, but that's me, check your's once installed. (may be ok)

question can you fit 6" elements under your decklid? probably not unless you go with the Gene Berg shorties and cut a little sheet metal, but that would require you to match port another set of manifolds. But "they" also say that minimal loss of Flow with the 3 1/4(1/2") size filter assemblies.
whatever you do, don't run Engine with out filters, there is still dirt particles on the drag-strip and most definatly on the street.

Bugs, I'll be surprised if I can fit my CARBS into the engine compartment without some sheet metal work, much less the cleaners. :)

It can't fold up. There is no way - not with the reinforcement of unistrut behind it. It's have to compress and splinter two 2x4s (diagonals) too.

I will have video, but not live. That site sucks.

Why do you say the site sucks??

I have the original exe from that site, BEFORE they want you to signup
for a bunch of crap. It still works.

Want me to send you the exe?

It fired, it came to life. It popped and sputtered until I could find a balance that got a fairly smooth 2000 rpm and then ran up a little more.

Got a lotta popping on 1,2 carbs, but timing took care of it, for now, until I can see what I need to do.

Got an oil leak, probably at the cooler, but not too bad. Proably lost about 5 table spoons over 20 mins. I could hear it when I shut it off.

Bulletins as they occur.

It's the cylinder base shims or one of the lower studs. I stripped it down and cleaned it off, and started it with no shroud (that's kinda fun!) and found that the leak originates on the lower part, in the center, either at or near the #4 stud. It's not the oil cooler.. that's clean.

I pulled the stud out, hoping to get some sealer on it and fix it, but no dice. Have to pull the head and jugs off that side and have a closer look. :(

Then I will re-torque both sides, adjust valves again, and see how we do.

Seems hard to get anything going with the two separate carburetors and no linkage yet. The 1/2 side seems to have a time popping through the carb barrels if I run it up, so I am gonna make sure the idle circuits are clean, and start messing with jets if all else smooths out.

Seems real touchy right now, but MAN, there is so much damn muffler pressure it's crazy. Really pumps it out. Sounds like it's gonna be mean.

Just sucks to have to go back and re-work that base seal. I hope everything is coolio with it, just re-seal and not re-work.
