Joxracing's 1966 Baja "The Resurection"

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

If running ~10 amps through your coil and ignition module works for you, great.

It will work fine until it dies and/or melts your wiring harness, possibly setting your car on fire.

...Or spend the $5 for the ballast, following the instructions that come with both the coil AND the ignition.

It's your car...
airdreams1 wrote:sorry if this seems like a thread jack..........

I have run the 3 Ohm Flame Thrower for several thousand miles & never put in a ballast resistor. (its the one meant for off road & can handle the vibration) I also have the 009 w/electronic Ignitor, 8mm wires, & bosh plugs. & still no problems. (have had the same setup on 2 other bugs in the past as well.)

Also I have done he exact same swap for several other VW owners & they havent had a single problem yet. (Many of them put 10 to 15k miles a year on there cars)

The only recomindation I have is to use a drop of adheasive to hold the wires to the inside of the dizzy. I had one wire get pulled & rub the pick-up, thus rubbing a hole in the wire insolation.....

So I dont see the ballast resistor as a nessacery part. But i could be wrong....

Oh & all the cars were 12 volt or converted to 12 volt with new wireing (except mine. its 12v, but still has the orignal wiring.)
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Got it running with the 1641 pistons, bought new plug wires, installed 'er, fired up first crank!

Idled good, but we still had a wicked leak coming from the crank seal(?)

Said screw it, took it for a ride down the road, shes got some snot to her, rides like a skateboard though 8)

But there seems to be knock(?), but when you kick it in the ass, it goes away, its a very small one, only at idle, any ideas?
we only had 1 1/2 qts of oil in it  , could that be it?

The inportant thing is.....

IT DRIVES!!!! :P

Take it from me

DO NOT EVER RUN YOUR ENGINE WITHOUT ENOUGH OIL.

'Nuff said.

But congratulations! I know how awesome that first drive is.

Does anyone know if the year of your motor matters when buyying a crank seal?

1961-on all use the same flywheel seal. If that's what you're referring to. Sand seals at the pulley end of the crank are not factory, so what fits what depends on whose deal has been put in. Nothing seals on the crank itself other than the o-ring inside the flywheel.

1-1/2 quarts and a knock could kill the motor. "Screw it" might mean "screw the engine".

I would buy some wire and some butt connectors. Then I would run a red wire and a black wire to them. Also buya aswitch to turn them off and on. These are the only tips I have. Wiring is not my strongest suit.

8) What brand and wattage are thoes lights? 8)

You schould be able to see down the trail a little way.. LOL

Maybe see them deer ready to jump on that Red Baja...
(Nice Job from what you started with)

If they are high wattage.... Watch your amp gauge when you turn them on...

Been tearing up the trails around Houghton Lake and Grayling...

We put over 1K miles on the “Cow Bug” last year… 80% off road…

We even took a little run on I-75 .. Ran fine at 75mph too…

“Almost” made it to "The Bridge" … Thought of you…
So, we stayed on this side....

We don't have internet Up North... Back home for a few days...
