I've been lurking around here lately, gleaning info to help with my 2.1 rebuild. Guess it's time to weigh in.
1300, I've been dealing with this same problem. I tore down a replacement longblock from AVP that I've put about 90k miles on. Six years ago, when I was shopping for a longblock (OEM engine chucked a rod thru the roof at 160k miles. Install an oil pressure gauge, kids, it's the only way to know if failure is imminent), I chose AVP because they charged $600 for full cores when everyone else was demanding $1000, even though none of the others actually had any cores to build on anyway. Now that I've torn it down, I see why their core charge was cheaper. They built my 2.1 on a 1.9 case. It has the older pin-indexed bearings, and a bit of clearancing was done inside around the cylinder bores for the 76mm crank.
Although I tore it down in order to replace the low-compression Brazilian P&L set AVP used (see the piston story at GoWesty
http://www.gowesty.com/piston_story.htm ), which had markedly less power new than the OEM engine had, even with such high miles (old engine still raised 160# compression at 6400' altitude, new one only did 130#), it's a good thing I did because the center main bearing was pretty trashed, all the Babbitt gone and deeply pitted copper showing. The #2 saddle had an obviously poor align-bore job, so now it's at RIMCO getting taken out to .040". They are going to supply me with some 2nd oversize T1 KS bearings for #2,3 and 4 mains, but leave the #1 alone since it mikes out fine. So I'm hunting down a .020" over, std. crank with oversize-thrust 1.9 bearing. Luckily Bob Donalds in Boston is going to come thru, he has some oversize thrusts he had custom made because of their near-complete unavailability.
Anyone know of any other sources for a bearing like that? Seems like there will be pretty good demand from now on. Rocky, perhaps?
