thoughts on straight-cut gears (noise)

hi guys ,... couldnt s/c gear noise be attributed to numerous factors including c/l of cam bores tomain saddles , parallelism of said bores,minor and major dias. +mesh angles of gears cut(like a diffy setup)etc,etc

hi again ,somebody,....please...respond...starting to think ..
well ive put many a motor together w/ the parts that had nothing going for them...
were talking semi or fully submerged complete motors , laying in mud puddles & whatnot .

wed clean up the parts & put the puppy back togetha w/ some rebuild stuff , w/gd maitenence, yr good togo for a long time.

some of this stuff is just plain crazy.

i want a 12.0 car that my girlfriend can drive.......maybe i should just get a new girlfriend....

Straight-cut gears whine. I like the sound, makes it sound more mechanical. I have a 69 Chevy 4X4 with straight cut gears in the transfer case. THere's a REAL whine for you. At 45 mph it sounds like a Boeing coming in overhead.

I make a living partially out of gear manufacture for really heavy industrial applications and can really tell you that for a given size of gears (and this is the case in a 2:1 relation with fixed center, case, centers) a helical gear is going to be more resistant than straight cut gears and this is because you do not have clashes between the meshing teeth, thats why the straigth cut gears make more noise than helical cut ones, the noise comes from thousands of tiny clashes that happen between the free space that any gear has so that it can absorb small manufacturing tolerances and size variations because of differences in the working temperature as the motor or gear case goes from cold to heated situation. In the helical cut teeth, allways two teeth are in contact so the gear is allways loaded to one side instead of alternating loaded unloaded situations that happen with every tooth that contacts in the straight cut gears.
If you really have problems with the gears the idea should be to manufacture them in alloy steel and give them a good heat treatment or in using carburized steel gears instead of the alloyed aluminium one.
