Need advice on dual fuel line install

Post by Victor H »

Well I did it a little different. Had the body off and used stainless, which with a tubing bender, was formed, from the stock location in back, over the torsion bar housing, around the back part of the driver's floor pan (running line outside)along the side of the floor pan next to the running boards then across the front frame horn through the hole that is right next to the brake master cylinder and up next to the stock inlet up front. This was all attached with aluminum brackets (Earl's)using sealing washers so no water can get into the car. Looks clean, only exposed area is up front where the two lines cross the front frame area before going up into the front frame hole (that will never hit a speed bump as it's behind the front wheels). Not sure if I'm going to flare and ss line or if fuel injection hose for now.

Hey Victor,
What size s.s. line did you use??
I like that idea of running up inside the floor pan recess, not going to hit anything up in there. Do you know if a s.s. line is available with the spring type wrapping around it that would help with wear from vibration and add some protection to the line where it cross under any parts of the pan,....maybe?

Thanks,

Hi Murph,
I'm not sure now, did it sometime last year. Used seamless Stainless steel coil from Chassis shop and they recommended the tubing size (3/8?, probably smaller). Was not that expensive and looks great. I'm not worried about wear from vibration as the installation is absolutely tight. Used Earls, anodized tubing holders alternating with tubing mount hold downs approximately every 8 inches. Put rubber grommet in chassis hole next to master cyliner, and have hold down in that location. Hope that gives you a little more info.

DOM (Drawn-Over-Mandrel) tubing is the way to go. Seams are a built-in weak point which you really do not want in a high-pressure fuel line.

Stock 914 "hard lines" are 9mm OD for the supply, and 7mm OD for the return. 9mm is between 5/16 and 3/8 (closer to 11/32), while 7mm is about 9/32. I haven't heard of the hard lines being any problem for 914 engines up through 150 HP, so I would strongly suspect that 3/8" would be more than sufficient for any reasonable motor.

Victor H: Are you around? I would love to see some pics of your fuel line, since I need to install a new one in my car, and I don't have the luxury of having the body off.

Hi Guys,
Yes I am around. I only have two pictures but they are of the most difficult area around the torsion bar housing. But with a good tubing bender they are not that hard to install. You can see that I alternated tubing separaters with tubing mounts to keep everything firm and rattle free.(I'm not sure if the picture thing worked, but here goes)
