Broke my race engine

Post by HotRod »

Chris, I feel your pain. Smoked my national motor in practice just before the first national this year. Using last years regional motor till I get new pistons. Went thru some broken valve springs last year, but without any major damage...couple broken rocker arms.

Broke my race engine

Post by Racer Chris »

I wasn't just going to roll over and play dead after such a depressing start to this season. In one week I put together a fresh engine from pieces of the two wrecked engines and my old ITB engine (stock 1.7L), along with a new camshaft (Webcam 86a), lifters, valve springs, retainers, bearings.

It was in and running after midnight Friday. I got up at 6 on Saturday, packed up, and headed to NHIS (3 hour drive) for a double regional.

The engine ran perfectly all weekend. Although not a national motor by any means, it is definitely strong enough to defend my regional title from the challenge of Smarty with his BMW. He won the first 6 races, but wasn't at NHIS. Now I have 2 wins and a second. With 6 races left, it will be an uphill battle to the end.

Broke my race engine

Chris....I started another thread asking for thoughts on an alternative for Djet 914s. I have a 2.0 race car that I need to keep cooler. Someone suggested you have a Corvair setup in your race car? Could you elaborate?

Good luck in your racing exploits!

Thanks,

Chris...I know the two engines were different..but did you swap fuel systems across? If something is not correct on that cylinder...could it be running hot on just one piston? Ray

Ray,

I have carbs for each engine. I know it is not just a coincidence that the same cylinder failed, but I also know there is no direct relationship between the two engines. I am treating it as a potential omen.

More than anything I am treating it as a personal challenge. Everything for me is an opportunity to learn.
