Type 4 or Rotary?
Hi,
If you look in the kit car forum under Kelmark you see may VW based Kelmark GT with a Turbo2 Rotary engine. If you want some real HP thats the way to go, but it is expensive. The computer to run the engine alone is $1500(Haltech E6K, try their web site), but on the other hand you tune your car with a laptop computer
The engine is what they call a J-spec engine. They pull them out of cars in japan and you can buy them for around $1000. Some people have had good luck with them and some have had bad luck(kind of like a junk yard engine.) Mine is just fine and puts out a lot of HP, and when it goes bad I'll be sending it to Pineapple Racing(web site), for a rebuild and port job.(the j-spec engine gives you all of the parts you would have to run around buying-turbo,intercooler-etc)
If your interested in what I did to the rest of the car(trans, suspension, etc), drop me an email and I'll give you a rundown(it took me three years to build.) The car is so fast its scary and I haven't even gone over half throttle yet as the tires on it look showroom new, but are 20 years old(new ones this month. Its about 1800lb and around 250 rear wheel HP!

The cooling pipes could be done by someone
who can weld. Or use another means to transfer the water.
Lots of bends to get the pipes where you ]
want them. One could use u- bends for the
corners. Even rubber hose could connect
the straight pieces.
Use your imagination. The Magnaflow muffler
was about $150.I like the sound and lots of
rotary guys use this muffler.
Because the exhaust temp is about 2000 degs
you must use stainless steel or the pipes
could melt.
Spend some time brain storming . You may come
up with an idea that could work for you.
I think I may eventually change to inside
pipes and put a raised floor over them.Do it
on the passenger side ,let him be hot.hehe
There are no set ways to do thease conversions. If you find a better way do it.
Type 4's are good also. No water, maybe more
low end torque.Choices ,choices, roll the dice
and lay your money down.
I wanted to do something different.I like the idea of the rotary. Rev that baby up and
then rev it some more.Their smooth ,loud and
nobody else around is gonna have one like yours.
As the saying goes "Unique is what we seek,
bizarre is what we are".
Have fun ,go fast,be different,be a pervert.
Piss off the Cal-look guys.
I'm kidding , I'm kidding,but I still get a
kick just looking at that weird *** motor in
the back of my bug.
Need to get a bumper sticker-------------

Rotary engines can stand up to alot, but when they break they're just about scraped. Piston engines are more rebuildable after a breakdown, usually. Both have their strong points but in the end, its up to the owner.

rotary's are cheaper to rebuild than piston engines if you dont go to those super expensive retail shops that rape u.
and the fact that theres only like a couple moving parts means its easier to rebuild yourself too.
check out www.2rotor.com for some mad good pricing of internal engine components.

I drive about 100 miles A DAY with my rotary powered bug. I have about 30,000 on the setup now and it is super reliable. I also spent about $2500 for the complete conversion.
Getting a rotary to make more power is easy, a stock 13b makes 130hp (but in a conversion, without using cats, the power will be more like 140-150) Cats are the biggest bottleneck in the rotaries power, and you don't need them! I have a 12a that has a 48IDA weber and I was told from a reputable shop that it is putting out around 150hp.
If you want more power, get a rotary ported. You can get up to 220hp Reliably and over 350hp for drag applications...this is without a turbo or nitrous...with 1300cc's!
I say, go with the rotary.

Joe-
Would you happen to have some pictures of how you mounted your radiator? Im very curiouse to see what you cut out and braced in order to fit in the radaitor.
Also, What kind of fabric did you use to finish off the trunk?
Thanks,
-Drak

All my costs for my V6 conversion are listed on my site. It's in Australian $ so divide by 2 and you roughly have US dollars. My V6 converions with rear disc brakes cost me $2000 US. Then I sold my old engine and other bits not needed and brought back the overall cost to $500 US.

I have a few pictures on my website of the trunk area, and the radiator bracketry. Check it out (the link is in my signature) I covered the entire area in black carpet and it turned out really clean.

I see it now. Did you make it so its a little sealed compartment and the only way for air to get through is through the radiator? What are the demensions of the RX-7 radaitor you used?
Thanks,

Kennedy Engineered(the adapter people), say to use 11/2in electrical conduit for the water lines and rent a bender to make the bends. I did that and it works out just fine. They also say in their info that you have to put a restrictor in line so you don't get steam.
