Probably a bit late for you, but I have seen some kit car articles on the web for some sort of VW based kit car which converted them to mid-engined but kept the bulk of the chassis. They redid the sump to clear the torsion housing and raised the trans slightly.
Anyway, I'll enjoy following your progress

That's interesting. There is probably nothing one can do to a bug that hasn't been done already!

What amazes me is that Beetles must be the number 1 car on the planet when it comes to the sheer amount way-out conversions and modifications.

Great workmanship! Do lighten the gears by machining thru-holes and/or machining some material away. Keep us informed of your status.

I think I have seen one of these done on a diablo replica. It was to use a v8 and auto tranny. I think they set the axle to the side to overcome the height issue. I guess you couldn't do that in a vw, and moving the engine to the side wouldn't work either.
