Rear torsion tube cutting

How about another thought. I am not sure what the tranny looks like that you are wanting to run but could you raise the engine and tranny up so the trans clears the torsion housing? When putting a bus tranny into a Baja, the kit raises the tranny up then a hockey stick style adapter is used for the shifter. If you are cutting out the back of the car anyway, why not try to leave your suport and build around it?

Mark,
If I raise up the engine and trans I won't be able to close the decklid. I'm going to keep most of the torsion tube and brace the middle to strengthen it where I've clearanced for the Trans.

I guess that is the advantage of running off-road. No pesky sheet metal to get in the way!

Ross, after looking at the pics of the rear of Martins car I had an idea. What if I still cut the centre out of my torsion tube and then tie it back together from above and below the gearbox with two hoops made from heavy gauge tubing, then take two more tubes from the torsion tube horizontaly along the line of the inner wings and across the valance for the 911 engine mounts and brace that inside the decklid with another two tubes up the sides of the engine through the firewall and tied onto an upright from the top of the the torsion tube then on down to the floor near the door b post to join another two tubes one going across the car to tie into the tunnel and one going back to the torsion tube at the outer corners. I figure that should give me a fair triangle.
Does that even make sense?
Would have been a lot easier to draw

Oh yea, what kind of tubing do you recommend?

Tim,Crash is right.Triangulation is the key here.Are you really that against a cage?Even a really tight fitting one? Otherwise, alot of careful planning, but it's do-able.

Thanks Guy, I was looking at it earlier, its amazing how little work I do now my workstation has internet access

I think my next step will be to get a 944 rear subframe and try fitting it to the bug pan.

btw, you seen the current Porsche & 911 world? There's a bug in there with a 911 transplant (tho the rear bodywork is kinda, um, interesting)....

Guy, yeah I saw it. Don't want mine to end up looking like that

I don't think he moved the gearbox forward, I've seen pictures of bugs with 911s in them that look totally stock on the outside until you lift the decklid.
