Dan, calm down.
Type 4 hydraulics don't "go flat" unless you don't drive the thing for a week, and haven't changed your oil in forever. I didn't address it because it's an old wives tale! Tell guys having problems to buy good german lifters instead of the "budget" ones, that's a start.
the "single port full throttle" engines are a prime example. They DO run for hours on end reliably, but they aren't putting out 130hp, are they? I can easily build a 500hp (ok, not easily) engine with NO cooling system that doesn't overheat, because it's shut down before it gets hot. Furthermore, a street T-1 can put out 250hp, and not overheat. You aren't driving around full throttle with the brakes on all the time, are you? You drive most of the time using 10-20hp, which develops around 20hp WORTH OF HEAT the cooling system must get rid of ;not a problem, even if your engine can put out 200+. The problem is if you run EXTENDED HP more than the cooling system can address, and that's where the T-1 is limited to 90hp, but the T-4 is 130-140 due to way more fin area. I seem to not be making myself clear, but I don't know how much more I can elaborate to make it easier.

at what power output? 60hp? Cake. 120hp? Get your 200+hp engine and run it in the Mohave for an hour at full throttle. in 10 minutes the engine is toast. Why? Engine output is NOT the same as what the cooling system is capable of removing. Think of it as cooling "storage". You don't need ANY fins if you only run for 2 minutes. But, for EXTENDED output, you can't exceed the cooling capacity of the engine, or the engine temp rises, PERIOD. If the engine removes 60hp worth of heat (stock doghouse system), and you are putting out 250hp, you have 190hp that is not getting cooled off, and though you have a bit of a bubble to work with, your engine temps rise! It's simple thermodynamics (Who here has taken Thermo I and II?). I was a 4th year ME when I switched to EE, and have a good educational background to understand these concepts, though they appear simple here, some guys can't grasp heat in = heat out.

200K miles full throttle? You obviously aren't reading what I'm saying. I routinely build 2.3+ engines that last a long time too, even with high compression (If you didn't know, Greg Ward is sponsored by us, and I have given him a LOT of his advice and knowledge on his engine to further his cause; ask him what HE thinks about my advice, not me). The key is how much power you are USING, not capable of. I said "130hp output" not 130hp capable. BIG difference. Run 140hp on a dyno for hours with a T-1 or a T-4 and then see which one lasts longer. I run T-1s on MY engines. My next one I'm planning on 350hp output. Can I sustain that? hell no! But it's only putting that out for 10 seconds at a crack, then it's back at an idle or 15hp rating, and the cooling system can catch up on the hot engine. BTW, my T-1s have never overheated since I learned the relationship of static compression and cam duration, so I have no idea where your "your engine's overheating" comment has come from. Where did you get the idea my engines overheat from? Please tell.
The Type 4 has more cooling capability, so it can be pushed harder and not break a sweat, more than the T-1. THAT is it's advantage (along with huge displacement). I'm not slamming the T-1 (why do I use them in my cars?), what I'm saying is there is a place for both, and you seem to be overlooking the obvious (cooling capability) differences.

i've put over 200,000 miles on bigger-than-stock type 1's... over 80,000 miles of that was on 2.1 liter type 1's, and THEY DID NOT OVERHEAT... did it ever occur to you that maybe that giant compression you are always preaching could have been a factor in YOUR type 1's overheating??
beyond that, there are dozens of success stories on the clf that claim the opposite of what you are saying here... greg ward and ohio tom come to mind.

i put a turbo on the 2.0 liter motor i'm running now, and it still does not overheat... and it makes a LOT more than 120 h.p.

that is the reason to go with a type 4... you can build it really big, and end up with a stronger bottom end.

at those same races are stock classes that are limited to single-port, stock type 1 configuration motors... those people run the same course as the type 4 people, with the pedal on the floor... their type 1's run for the entire season(110+ degree desert heat), and more.

you know, i've tried to get some exact info out here on how the torque curve of a 2.0 type 4 is better than a 2.0 type 1, but nobody has been able to provide it... and vague references to shorter rods are not the answer.
do you have any facts to back up those claims?

obviously, as you just proved, the type 1 head is far superior to the type 4 head... which is why i don't run type 4 stuff.
