Survey of 944 Front Brake Adapters and Handbrake Cable

Yes, good point the link pipe is not symmetrical so need to swap between the calipers. I’d forgotten that bit.

Bruce, et al.

After closely inspecting my front brakes relative to my 3 wheel sets (all 15 inch wheels) only one set will clear the calipers. Original 15x6 Porsche Phonedials and 15x5.5 steel wheels (former 944 temporary spares) just barely interfere...but they DO interfere.

As Bruce stated above, you're going to need 16s if you want to run Boxster rears on the front.

That said, if anyone is considering running said brakes, PM me.

Just looking through the new and improved STF and came upon this thread.

Unnecessary follow up to my last post. Ultimately, I FINALLY gave up on trying to find a home baked alternative to the vented rotor CSP brake kit I looked at 7 or so years ago. After spending almost 3/4th of the cost of the CSP kit on 4 different failed attempts, I bit the bullet and bought the CSP kit. Since I'm in the States, I do not have a set of 1303 disc brake spindles. Thus my kit uses caliper mounting adapters which bolt in the place of the former drum brake backing plate(s). If I ever acquire a set of 1303S spindles, I win swap them in immediately.

As an aside, EMPIs new owner are marketing forged spindles for standard Beetle so I wrote to them asking if they would consider creating a factory style disc brake spindle for 1302s and 3s since I believe they would have a ready market. I haven't heard back thus far, but they have responded in the past when I wrote about other things. My reason for wanting disc brake spindles is I would ready like to run a dust/splash shield on the front for the additional protection (through I acknowledge it's not much) and so it matches my rear brakes.

So, my brakes are: Front, 278mm vented, cross drilled and slotted rotors with 42mm piston calipers on stock 1303 spindles, Rear, factory n/a Porsche 944 rear sliding caliper brakes with slotted and cross drilled rotors. I am utilizing the 944 parking brake set up with tubes and swans from veedub engineering which allow me to use factory Super Beetle parking brake cables.

Regarding the quality of the CSP brake kit...though a bit expensive when shipping from Germany is factored in...it has VERY precise fitment. The calipers are perfectly centered over the rotors. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when all three of my wheels cleared the calipers with plenty of room to spare.

P.S. Forgot to mention, I swapped in a new 20.6mm master cylinder. I'm not sure it's necessary, as I had 4 wheel discs on my previous 1303 (though not with vented rotors), using the factory drum brake mc and the brakes were outstanding.

I think I've asked before. Two different spindles were used on 1303s. 73s used the same as a 1302 spindle, then 74-79s used the later ones. I've got a pair of factory 1302 disc brake spindles (to fit your 73?)

Yeah, we discussed it via PM. You have a pair of the early spindles, I need the later suspension spindles. Someone shall eventually be a lucky person when they contact you. Unfortunately MY search continues.

Still I thank you for trying Bruce.
