The cases are made of DRIED TOOTHPASTE!
If you can even find a good one anymore...![]()
When was the last time you found a good german Type 1 case???
Brazil quality or China quality - take your pick (and blueprint _everything_)
I could rant for hours on all the machining flaws in Type 1 cases now..
They pull case savers, the mains pound out, the backs crack!
T1 cranks flex, even with counterweights, not to mention how CRAPPY the China cranks are right out of the box!
Whee! let's do some Hoover HVX mods! maybe that will make it live?
The flywheels require a circus to get them to hold, but still go on and off,
The valve springs try and rip the rocker studs out of the heads, causing leaks.
China crap head studs stretch like taffy.
I could go on and on and on.
Type fours go together and stay together for miles and miles.
With a type 1, you run it, and then, if you are lucky, you take it right back apart.
Otherwise, it takes itself apart instantly.
I have a type 1 sitting here, all back together _again_ ready to go in.
Boy, is it pretty!
Especially after being built and re-built SO many times!
But,
I think I'll leave it here on it's little display stand.
Oh yes, it makes power - a ton of power.
But then it has to come right back apart.
Anybody who says otherwise is lying.
All these type 1 hot-rod motor stories start with "when i get this thing back together..."
Must....Not.....Rant.....
Find my happy place..... Right here next to my (running/together) type 4!

Deno99 That is the exact reason I got into T-4's, T-1 was all I knew before T-4 so I learned the hard way. Also all the guys that sold after market parts wanted you to know.
But hey I got into it the late 80's, and will never look back. T-1 is a rolling time bomb. T-4, get it running and forget about it. Seriously, I have over 100k on mine and it runs like new. I change my oil every 3k and it looks clean at that mileage. Compression is like new. A T-1 at anytime over 50 needs a valve job and that is a stock engine that was well maintained. Ha.

I change my oil and filter every 12K or once a year, or when it looks like it needs it, whenever I get to it.
(rotella T6 and Mobil1 filter)
Last one went >400K miles (and was a scrape-together top-end only with well used but OG bottom end to start with)
... only came apart due to the cam thrust bearing being gone and thus making funny noises.
Still using the same main bearings, were perfect and in spec with a "fresher" used crank.
I'm hoping to double that with the dual thrust cam bearings

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Re: street / track/ hill climb/ weekender combination
Hey guys who sells LE200 heads these days? I cart seem to find any for sale.
As I understand it the LE200 are the best heads, but how do the DRD and AA compare? I don’t mind spending a little more for the correct head if it means that I only have to spend once.
Im after approx. 180hp from 44X36 @ 9.55:1

Re: street / track/ hill climb/ weekender combination
The RS+ heads will very likely get you there if you are @~2270cc, along with the recommended cam/valve train that goes with them. The LE200s are a bit much for a less than over the top 2.3L.
Have you contacted Charles at the type4store.com?

So tempted to sell you my 2270 that I built using raby parts, I built it all myself and its a great engine, uses LE 200's with a 9550?(163/86B) RAT cam, bored out german cylinders with a V2 DTM. But I know I will kick myself in the arse if I sell it, your welcome to come for a ride in my bug if you want to experience type 4 power.

Re: street / track/ hill climb/ weekender combination
Ok so I’ve been talking to a couple of engine builders and I’ve been told that if all my internals are ok (I haven’t split my case yet to look, it’s a 1.8L) that I should just get it machined for 105’s and get a set of 48x36 duel spring heads and a cam to my taste all at 9.5:1. approx. 2455cc 220hp+
My question is has any one done this? Is the combo itself ok or complete rubbish? Will the standard internals even cope?
I tend to agree with the train of thought that a smaller crank and bigger pistons to bring up the revs and keep the low end toque in check may be the way to go for my application.
Anyway its just a thought, im fairly certain that my case has seen a bit of work over the years and I would feel better knowing that its been completely rebuilt.

Re: street / track/ hill climb/ weekender combination
It will take some very expensive heads to get you in the 220hp range. Probably the price of a small car.
Type 4's are NOT cheap.
