I ran home with the new voltage meter. Using Rob and Dave's website I found no increase in voltage at the battery while revving the engine. Then found the same thing at the generator. I tried polarizing as the website says. Initially the generator spun for a moment. Then stopped. I found a 16amp fuse had popped. I put in a new fuse but couldn't get the generator to move while polarizing.

I assume something broke inside the generator. Luckily I have a spare But I'll probably take this one apart first. I had those plastic protectors that fit on the generator, protecting the brushes. I may have busted something while forcing them onto the genny.

IT reminds me of something my dad used to say to me regularly: Boy, you could screw up a wet dream.

I took the genny apart last night. Probably didn't need to. The whole problem was one of the plastic covers that protects the brushes had pushed the spring off the brush, stopping contact with the armature. It's still on the work bench but using a dry cell battery I polarized it again.

Now I have to deal with finding the right number of shims so that the fan doesn't hit the shroud. Then I get to see whether this has fixed the over-heating problem that I've been dealing with for two years.

I assume the fact that it could be polarized means the genny should work and the red idiot light won't stay on while idling.

The voltmeter shows the new generator isn't charging. I took the generator out. A difficult job when the engine is in the car. I tried polarizing it on the work bench with a 12v dry cell battery. No spinning. So I took it apart. I noticed the spring that holds one of the brushes against the armature had been pushed to the side. I must have done it while putting the plastic covers over the brushes. IF I had checked the brushes first.....Then tried polarizing again and this time it spun. Again, several hours of adding shims, putting it back, taking it back out and adding more shims. But finally got the fan to stop rubbing the shroud. This time the idiot light went out. Success! Tomorrow I'll have time for a long drive to check the engine temp. Thanks for all the advice.
