Since this is a VW board, other cars are irrelevant. A VW steering lock doesn't engage until you pull the key out. Turn the key all the way off, not a problem.
One one trip I make at least once a year, I can coast with the engine off for 19 miles and maintain a reasonable highway speed. Then I have to start the engine for half a mile to get 4 more coasting miles. Steering and braking are no different in a Bug, so IMO the safety card does not apply.
Drove over Espinaso del Diablo between Durango and Mazatlan. When going down on the Mazatlan side, there's a place where you coast for like an hour or more... Incredible. Never did it in a beetle though. The bug mostly sputter downhill.

Hmmmm, I just did that drive on Friday and didn't note anywhere coasting would be worth while. Maybe you're a rich kid and took the cuota?

No, we drove the "libre". There's not toll roads to cover all yet are there? (If there are, we're going there next time we head for Torreon.)
There was an steady length of coasting near the end. Or maybe, well, depends on how you drive I guess... I drive slowly, all the crosses and signs bearing notice of how many died along this road makes me prefer getting home a little later than die falling off a cliff in the jungles of Sinaloa...

I guess if you drive 5 mph like the transports do, you could coast an hour.
I took the libre, and the down hill driving is not significant enough. After a short down, you need to go up a bit. Then back down.
The Cuota exists from San Lucia almost to the road from Mazatlan to Tepic. I heard from someone that by Apr, the whole cuota should be done. I didn't pay much attention to that since I wasn't waiting.
Its called hypermiling. For those with a Carb then that first post wont apply and you will see higher MPG's if the clutch is pushed in and coasting downhill. When he says it doesnt save you any gas he is refering to newer vehciles that automatcally cut fuel when there is less load on the engine, this only happens when the load is less for a couple seconds.
