I've got an extra crankshaft I can use to check fit. My plan was to heat it in a toaster oven and slather grease on the end of the crankshaft.

I've never personally experienced any problems with an aluminum pulley seizing to the crank. It's not normally the sort of thing you need to remove & replace frequently, though, and I'd rather have it fit a little too tight than too loosely. Use a little crocus cloth or fine sandpaper to smooth any burrs from the crankshaft snout, and install the pulley dry (no grease/anti-seize). If it seems too snug, go ahead and heat it up some - but a 212°F bath in boiling water should be sufficient, I wouldn't use an oven.

Thanks for the note. I think using the hand sledge to put the pulley in is why it's wobbly now. But that was when the engine was on the bench. This new pulley gets installed with the engine still in. I know there's a homemade tool I saw in Muir's book but can't find it now. It might have been for removal rather than installation.Marc wrote:I've never personally experienced any problems with an aluminum pulley seizing to the crank. When you do your valve adjustments, turn the engine with the gen/alternator pulley nut and not with the crank pulley bolt. That way you can turn the engine counter-clockwise without loosening the crank pulley bolt.

Thanks. For once I'm looking forward to valve adjustments now that I have a degree pulley. It always bugged me that I was guessing on TDC in #2 and 4.

I just turn the engine clockwise...the generator pulley nut may also come loose if you use it to turn CCW (it's only supposed to be torqued to ~45lb-ft at most).
A stock pulley has two "windows" in its face where a puller can be applied to remove it, located 180° apart. Simply note their position when on #1 or #3, and turn the crank until their positions are swapped. If you're really anal about it you can paint a mark (or file a notch) at 180°, but anything within an inch or so is close enough for all but the most radical of camshafts.

Re: Shuddering clutch and wobbling rear pulley
Okay, both pulleys are in. After all that fear the crankshaft pulley went in easily. Same for the generator pulley. I didn't need to heat either part. With some anti seize lube they went in without pounding. The clutch shudder is gone also. When idling there's no wobble in either pulley. For a change, Empi products worked well.
Thanks for all the help,
