and you caught another of my mistakes, I forgot the axle is not located within the transmission, so yes, the bearing cap does locate everything. in a very roundabout manner. I hope you don't break through machining that much off! the oil drain hole probably will be an issue, but drill it into your caliper bracket, although i assume you already have, and then just a touch of silicone maybe in the right places to keep the oil where it aught to be.
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Things are rarely just crazy enough to work, but they're frequently just crazy enough to fail hilariously.

Picked up my machined bearing caps and some spacers I had made up to hopefully stop the play in the bearing.

Replacing a mates front valance and wheel well today but hope to get on to mine tomorrow to see if it all works?

Ok, finished sorting Tom's front valance http://www.volkszone.com/VZi/showthread ... 485&page=3

So back on to mine.

Cleaned everything up and installed new 'VW' seals ;)

Cut gaskets to correct size

Test fitted everything again and again

Gaskets all ready to go

Image

Ready for the caliper bracket

Now strangely enough, and I have no idea why at the moe, but my spacers werent needed!!! :) Just having the caps milled a fraction more has sorted the bearing float! So Im cuffed with that! Ive checked and rechecked and all is tight and nice!

So thats sorted! Just need to keep an eye on it for a while to make sure.

Typically while putting the wheels back on a wheel stud came loose! Great! 1 step forward 2 steps back! Oh well Im off on holiday soon so will sort it once Im back ;)

Cheers,

J

Those look like IRS bearing caps being used on a swing axle. That is why Fuser noted the seals going in from the opposite side of the cap, and no oil weep hole in the cap. There should also be an o-ring that goes around the bearing housing lip before the cap goes on, but the caps you have are not machined for the o-ring. Looking back at your pictures of your caliper bracket, I see that you would not be able to use the large o-ring.
