I do have an oil temp gauge in the car but not a head temp. As it is my dash is full of gauges. My boost gauge is just about right in front of the passenger. I have oil temp, oil presher, tach, speedo, fuel and now boost. I have a full dash.

We spent 3 hours tuning on Saturday changing jets and such but to no avail. From 3k - 6k it's a rocket with 10psi boost. But from 2500 - 3500 there is a stumble or hesitation that we couldn't get rid of. We changed jets at least 4 times. We were thinking it might be ignition so we put a new cap, rotor and plugs. The only thing we didn't change is the coil. It's frustrating to say the least. It idles just fine we just need to get rid of the hesitation. We are going to start from scratch tomorrow evening in hopes of getting it fixed. Wish me luck.

My car did the same thing at one point, after closing down the plug gaps from .032 to .028 it disappeared. Might be something to look into.

Ok so life got in the way the first part of this week and I haven't had a had much time to work on it. Although I did try to change the gap in the plugs and it didn't do anything. From 3k - 4/4500 still has a bad hesitation. but once it clears up at 4000rpms HOLY CRAP it puts you in the seat untill it red lines at 6K. So lastnight I took off the turbo hats and went for a short ride just to see how it works n/a, man that thing just spudders and falls all over it's self above 3k RPM and won't recover. My thinking is it's still too fat. My buddy is bringing over all his dellorto jets as well as his dell turbo E-tubes. It will hopefuly be running and tuned tonight.

Did you have any hesitation before you rebuilt your engine and decided to turbocharge it? How are you controlling ignition advance?

I didn't have any hesitation before when it was n/a but when I went turbo, I went from dual 44 webers to dual 45 Dellortos. As far as the ignition goes I'm running a stock 009 with 24* total advance. What gap are you guys running on your plugs? Granted I'm still useing my blue coil but i just put new plugs, cap and rotor on it.

I'm running .032 gap. When I first went turbo, I went with a Holley draw-thru setup and the reason I did (besides the extra power of course) was because of the "ease of tuning" with the adjust-a-jet. Before I went turbo, I ran a set of DRLA 40's and they usually ran great but did have a slight bit of hesitation that I never did get fully addressed before I removed them.

I got tired of "tuning" with screwdrivers and jets and went with fuel injection and haven't looked back. I'm sure that's not what you're looking to do, but it's where my tuning evolution ended. No more hesitation, hickups, burps or farts....

I would love to to go F.I. but my wallet/wife are huge limitations. How much would it cost to put together a home build system for my turbo motor? I just don't have the $$ for the CB kit.

I know that feeling well but don't know what it would cost to build your own system though I'm sure you can do it with a little research and some nice used parts from the salvage yards. 45 Dells aren't cheap and you could probably cover a majority of the cost if you found the right buyer for them. I sold my 40's on eBay well over a year ago for $475. I bought my FI kit from Mario at The Dub Shop and it came with everything I needed to complete the installation.

Don't let me discourage your tuning efforts with your 45's because I'm sure you will get them dialed in to where you are happy with them as many have and you'll start cranking the boost and having loads of fun.

Don't get me wrong I will get the 45's working tonight but I'm always looking ahead. How much did your kit cost and what options did you get. the reason i'm asking is i didn't find any hard numbers on his website or even a contact number.

Mario has a couple of kits available on his site. Check them out at www.thedubshop.net

I bought the German kit with upgraded (550cc) injectors. It came with everything I needed including a tune to get me started for Megasquirt and all of the technical help that I needed. I know that there are several great vendors out there and I would never hesitate to send someone Mario's way as he helped me tremendously. I couldn't be happier with the way my car runs right now and I haven't had to fiddle around with anything for quite some time.

Update: it is just about done. The 170's were way too fat. We went down to 145 it was a little too lean. Went to 150 just about there. There only prob is we need 155. We did end up using the CB Dellorto turbo etubes. I didn't know what I was missing running a n/a motor. Im stuck at home while the wife is out. I was able to do a quick run in front of my house. My buddy did a run down the street and it got side ways on him in 2nd gear. I will be able to go for a drive in about an hour I will post my finding when I get back.

I own a rocket :) lol I must say that it gives me a whole new look on Vw motors. I have been building / driving baja's since I was 8 and have never had that much fun in my baja. I learned to drive in the baja I have now when I was 8. It has been through a lot to say the least. I will post some pics of everything tomorrow.

Welcome to the addictive world of boost! Your description reminds me of the transformation of my street legal sand rail went through from before to after the turbo. Like a rocket, it is all about power to weight ratio.
