Seabee turbo buggy build

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

It was pure luck. I knew I wanted one . I just bought it . got the mounts and driller holes added the bolts. done.. I Did not know it would go up so easy. weighs like 30 lbs. holds over 200 lbs of gear. and I dont feel the difference when loaded or not. That is what I like the most.

I have one heavy steel rim for a spare tire. about 500$ is spare parts, nuts, bolts and another 30 lbs of tools up there. Some times chairs and water. Case of MRE's just because I can.

SeaBee, Thats one great looking Baja you have. The work you have done and detail is awesome. When I get the chance I am going to completely rebuild my rail and add a turbo to it.

Thank you. It is fun to drive. I love it when people pull up to it in the desert. Most like to see it and then a few will start pointing out what they would do different.. Last guy had a list of like 5 items. I told his friend if he could keep up with me I would do it. He was not willing to race... Not that I am a racer. I am not.
Hay leatherneck. You can add this to the sticky of peoples rides. It makes it easy for me to find when I want to send it to someone. Thanks.

Nice buggy!
I didn't realize thet was your car. I had seen the pics of the a arms on Pete's website. Those are the pictures that made me call Pete and order mine.

Your sig says "sometimes UT"--whereabouts?
I may have some questions for you when I start putting mine together

Well I picked up my buggy today. The new trans is in. I have not really drove it much.. The bus to bug conversion changed a few things. The trans sits higher. The CV's on the trans bind or make a knocking sound. The rear was adjusted to lift it more. but the total degrees is only 22* It is weird the engine sits lower but the trans 930's sit higher off the frame horns. I have to make a new mount for the muffler . Not a big deal. The shop replaced one of the CV's with a race prepped CM cage. It made the noise go on the one side. They did not have one for the other side. I wonder if it will smooth out after driving a little. Could bust too. I have my other almost new German CV. How do you race prep them? is there a shop that does this? I don't want to go buy another 140$ cv. Total cost for me was 1270$ my buddy who broke it paid 1250$. I still made out . Shifting is not as smooth as it was before but good enough.

We'll have to get together for a Moab trip. I have to go right though Price to get there.

I took the buggy out today. I was in 4th gear 4000 rpm maybe 55 /60 mph My old trans will go 65 in 3rd gear. The gearing is so low it may hit 5 lbs boost. I knew it was a sand trans but come on I was going faster than that before in the sand with my t1. In short I hate this trans. it will now cost me another 1500 to re gear it.

Hmmm, I think someone told you this in another thread.... anyway, sorry dude, transmission issues suck.

What ratio's & R&P did you get?

LOL, sorry, I just couldn't resist! But I do feel bad he spent so much and didn't get what he wanted.

Tranny ratios are one of the most important decisions you make.

I was told by a tranny builder that this would work fine for what I was wanting. He based this off of it was in his car for 2 days (due to he broke his and borrowed this one for the weekend). The R&P will work for street as it is a 4:57 I had no reason to not believe him as I don't have the Gear ratios. It was a unknown. This is not the same trans I posted up before.
Sure it was a risk but I was getting a fully built top of the line 3000$ trans for 1500 $

Well here is what I had before I found the gearing too late. this is on 30'' tires.

T1 trans 4.12 R&P going to 4.57 R&P
1st 3.78 = 31 mph at 5500rpm going to 3.44 = 31 mph
2nd 2.08 = 57 mph at 5500rpm going to 2.08 = 51 mph
3rd 1.48 = 80 mph at 5500rpm going to 1.35 = 79 mph
4th 0.93 = 127mph at 5500rpm going to 1.00 = 107 mph

I liked the first 3 gears i had. they were fast and had long boost runs. 4th gear sucked and was hard to get much out of it.

I was too lazy to re program my spedo. I did not know I was going so fast. I figured it was close to 20 mph slow before and now I see it was about correct. I shifted in to 3rd and the spedo said 40 mph.

That also means when I was going through the whoops in 3rd gear pushing 5000 rpms. I was going in the 70 mph range. not accounting for wheel slip on dirt and whoops.

Well that is a starting point for now. I may adjust it down a little for faster boost response I do get full boost at 3000 rpm start about 2500rpm. but with the taller gears it really pulls hard further.
