Chromoly push rods with zero lash made my engine a bit quiter.

The golden ratio is Phi, which lots of folks shoot for.
1.75:1 works best over all according to the smart people that I believe.

Marc wrote:While that might be true in some cases, it wouldn't be helpful on a stock VW engine. With a stock 5.394" rod and 69mm stroke, the VW has a rod ratio of nearly 2:1 (most V8 builders would give up a nut for that, they're usually dealing with too-
low rod ratios) and that's approaching the maximum practical ratio for a street engine. Longer rods cause the piston travel to slow approaching and departing TDC, giving the piston time to "flutter" under light loads.
I once had a race engine with a 2.1:1 rod ratio...it was great at high RPM, but below ~1500 it rattled like a diesel.

Talking about the ratios, it's also known that the 1:1 or the "square ratio" will be relatively efficient, but louder.. anyway, you're all right, keeping the ideal configuration is substantial, thus isolating the noise is safer than reducing it from the source..
Unfortunately we will never have the best of both sides. i guess that's why they calls us bug-heads

On the highway, it's ALL about intake noise...
Ever see the airfilters on a 356?
They have a snorkle like your mom's Oldsmobile had - for the same reason.
There's those Germanlook carbon fiber airboxes with dual-snorkle.
I was planning on trying to fit two oil-bath filters side-by-side on my Type 4 in type 3.
Intake noise is everything on the highway.
Wait, i said that twice...

i can vouch for intake noise, the difference between FI and carbs, and then the difference when i whent from a 2.0 w/ bus heads to a 2.0 with 914 heads and the big valves, could hear it quite easily. suuuuuuuuuuck

Hydraulic lifters. Plus add urethane plugs between the head fins like is commonly done with air-cooled motorcycles. Be sure the lower air tin is in place (look into using the vanagon lower tin that is double wall). Be sure excess rocker arm side clearance is eliminated.
