Short answer: Red coil + ballast + pertronix or compufire combo should work OK.
Pertronix are fine, as is the Compufire.
The lack of a ballast with a red coil, used with a compufure or pertronix module is just as likely to smoke the module as it is the coil. (Same for a Mallory Unilite)
The 009 causes the flat spot because it is missing the vacuum advance. It can easily be recurved to reduce the effect, also you can increase the accelerator pump shot volume and/or speed slightly, some richen the idle jet to compenate as well.
Lack of working manifold heat makes this worse, and it all of the above will hurt your fuel mileage some.
There ARE driver modules that work w/o a ballast, VW/Audi etc used them on Golfs/Rabbits/etc, GM used a similar setup in their HEI modules, both have a current regulator and adaptive dwell. The VW one can be triggered by points or the Pertronix.

Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

Yup, and the switched Red power wire (through your ballast resistor) from the ignition switch also to the + on the coil.Joxracing wrote:anyone know how to hook up the pertronix 009 dizzy?
just red wire to positive on coil, and black to negative?
You should have bought the 3 ohm coil and ditched the ballast resistor.
I accidentally Googled my Twitter. (And I liked it)

Pertronix hook up instructions:
www.pertronix.com/support/manuals/pdf/ignitor12vneg.pdf
If using the ballast, the red lead to the pertronix goes to the input---+12V side of the ballast, The black goes to the - side of the coil, and the Other side of the ballast powers the + side of the coil.
The only thing the ballast in the coil does is heat up the coil.

YES!!!!!
It made noise and smoke!!
It started!!!!
I had one of my friends dad came out at around 7 and we started to work, drained the oil, put new oil in, he wired everything up good, and it started!!!!
Then the carb started to stick, so i didnt run for like more than 30sec, but it ran.
the throttleflange? kept sticking and the carb was running with the devil, so we kept trying and it kept sticking.
so he took my two 1bbl'sback to his house and is gonna rebuild them for tmrw.
then we're gonna final time it, the hopfully go for a ride!!!
Im sooo pumped!!
PS
my bug sounds like a pissed off hog.
its loud, and smokey.

Oh, and i would like to thank my new sponsor, Budweiser Gasket Co.

Whoever built this baja before me had some real redneck engunity.

Well, the running car was short lived.
we got the cab on this morning, started it up, and it would rev like someone had there foot to the floor and then it would cut out.
so we had the guy come out again, and we switched out the elec. points dizzy with the mechanical style dizzy, and tried it and we got the idle sounding pretty good...
but then we were blowing oil outa the exhuast pipe, and out of the #1 and #3 cylinders, so we shut it down, and my buddy advised us to check the pistons and rings..
so we droped the motor, while he took a set of 1641 pistons and jugs back to his shop to have them cleaned and worked on..
looked like the #1 and 3 piston's rings were wore right down, so tmrw or monday ill be putting those 1641 pistons and jugs on, then putting the motor back in.
ugh....

sorry if this seems like a thread jack..........
I have run the 3 Ohm Flame Thrower for several thousand miles & never put in a ballast resistor. (its the one meant for off road & can handle the vibration) I also have the 009 w/electronic Ignitor, 8mm wires, & bosh plugs. & still no problems. (have had the same setup on 2 other bugs in the past as well.)
Also I have done he exact same swap for several other VW owners & they havent had a single problem yet. (Many of them put 10 to 15k miles a year on there cars)
The only recomindation I have is to use a drop of adheasive to hold the wires to the inside of the dizzy. I had one wire get pulled & rub the pick-up, thus rubbing a hole in the wire insolation.....
So I dont see the ballast resistor as a nessacery part. But i could be wrong....
Oh & all the cars were 12 volt or converted to 12 volt with new wireing (except mine. its 12v, but still has the orignal wiring.)
