It will take a lot more heat than any 12 volt heat tape could put out.
You would be better off going EFI....no icing problems and you can tune it yourself so it will save you the tuner and a dyno.

Hi Ruben
Running fuel thought the supercharger while running carbed, cools down the supercharger as well as the intake air charge. Running EFI on the other hand with port injection does not do that. I had to run an intercooler when running EFi with the AMR. At light load the supercharger housing easily heats up to 70-80C. Pedal to the metal driving brings the temperature of the housing to the 160-170C range
.
I asked about the ambient temperature because I think your icing issues will be less pronounced when the temperature rises in the spring. I also think that the heat from the supercharger with normal driving will most likely cure your icing problem. Did you notice less icing after you drove the car???
The amr (roots supercharger with straight lobes) is pretty old school. Running carbed can work well. If you run EFI, you most likely going to end up needing an intercooler or water injection. The setup I wil be trying this coming season is EFI with 4 port injectors, a ducati throttle body with a shower style injector and E85. The 5th injector will be running staged. The idea is that the fuel from the extra injector will cool down the intake charge and the supercharger (kinda like when running carbed). If this is not enough, I will be adding water injection. I really want to see if I can make this work without the intercooler.

here is a pic of how I rigged the 5th injector on the old setup to test how staged injection works.

Keep at it Ruben, you will make it work
What I would try is get rid of the lean spots and try it out with a bit more load to see if the icing goes away. When you also had the engine idling and there was icing, the engine lid was open, that means the air around the manifold was ambient. A closed engine lid is a lot toastier than that which would also help with the icing.

Re: Amr500 on 1641cc ! Fab. work is done, ready for dyno
Thanks for the input guys!
First off i dont want to go efi, not yet anyway.
I dont have to pay for the tuning and dyno, my engine guy wants to do it to learn and test for other blown setups wich are definatly comming.
When i was looking into the heat-tape there are models that can heat till 60ºcelcius. Think thats hot enough.
Icing occured when ideling and even driving. But havent ran it under load.since it needs further tuning.

It's not that electrical heating won't work, it's that your electrical system will self destruct trying to make enough power to feed anything heavy duty enough to be effective. It's just easier to say it won't work.

Hmmmm. Do you really think that maybe 20-40W will destroy the eletrical system?
When the manifold freezes you will only need little power to just get it above freezing point. Just the icing inside the manifold is f ucking up my flow....

Did you get to dyno it yet
I'm excited to see what it makes

no, its only tuned to get it down the road, new jets are on order, when they arrive i'll get my car over there, get a good maintenance and then the dyno

An excellent way to preheat the air into the carb is to use an exhaust driven super charger, it can be so effective that an intercooler maybe required.

Yeah some may call it overkill, but you can't have too much overkill.

That's really not a bad idea.... hmmmm would be kinda funny figuring out the pipe-work.

... most turbos don't really care much as long as you get the goesintas and goesoutas plumbed to the right places and sealed up good.rubenski wrote:That's really not a bad idea.... hmmmm would be kinda funny figuring out the pipe-work.

An HX35 would probably look great feeding the blower.
I strongly suspect keeping the intake manifold ice-free would need more like 1500 watts of heat, if not far more.
It takes considerable energy to both make ice and to melt it.
Addendum to Newtons first law:
zero vehicles on jackstands, square gets a fresh 090 and 1911, cabby gets a blower.
EZ3.6 Vanagon after that.(mounted, needs everything finished) then Creamsicle.

You blown or turbo'd? If you would have a Supercharger on a bug it would be gettin weird....

Haha no! Sadly not yet!! Maybe one day!
Are you running any filters or anything? Not worried about sucking in birds or old people??
