Really off road - like, in water !

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

Got this from Wikipedia:

Isopropyl alcohol is a major ingredient in "gas dryer" fuel additives. In significant quantities, water is a problem in fuel tanks, as it separates from the gasoline, and can freeze in the supply lines at cold temperatures. It does not remove water from gasoline; rather, the alcohol solubilizes water in gasoline. Once soluble, water does not pose the same risk as insoluble water as it will no longer accumulate in the supply lines and freeze. Isopropyl alcohol is often sold in aerosol cans as a windscreen de-icer.

You can get 99% IPA (1% water) at the drug store for the same price as the 70% flavor (30% water). You may need to ask for it as they sometimes hide it behind the counter.

Sorry for the hijack, but interesting comments.

yeap, thats waht I heard. Anyways preheat is probably easier, but thats gonna b ea toasty compartment I think, this is another problem that can be addressed later if it crops up. just make sure it does;nt crop up during a water crossing!
give a man a watch and he'll allways know what time it is. give him two and he can never be sure again.

Things are rarely just crazy enough to work, but they're frequently just crazy enough to fail hilariously.

Yep, as an added bonus, it gives a slightly cooler air charge in the cylinder too...

Personally I don't think this will work. But it won't hurt to try. Has anyone used IPA with success?
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

Was your old car a aircooled VW?

Yep, on twin 45's, so used to run like a right dog with a bit of icing.

We are talking about single center mounted carbs without the pre-heat tube of the exhaust. The icing problem isn't really a problem with duals.

It is with no preheat and insulated manifolds...
It cured the same problem on my peugeot which has a single + no preheat too.

Awesome build Mr Slug. How far are you from Bath, we are coming to the area next year, I have a buddy there with a Glass buggy I sent him lots of parts. He is on the Buggista website.

Since you are around military vehicles my son is looking for a 24volt diesel eberspacher heater for his Unimog. None here in the states.

I've only just read the rest of this thread, you've certainly got some panel forming skills!
You can come up here and make our buggy pretty when you've finished.

P.S. - Regarding the camber on the beam axle with the car being so high - a few old-school autograss cars around here used to stick trails/enduro bike tyres on, never worried them then, the handling is much more consistant - I suppose if you choose a mud/grass tread pattern it'd look fairly period too...

I quickly searched to see if I could get you one and set it aside. couldn't find any, but hey waddaya know - There are three in your own back yard !

Unfortunately, I live over on the East coast - Bath is over on the west. When you get to bath, be sure and have a look at the old Roman baths - 2000 year old sauna - you gotta love them Romans.

Last little while I have been doing engine and stuff, I figured this weekend to have a break from that and make a panel.

There is a removable panel in front of the axle beam to protect it, and stop brush or weeds getting caught. I figured it was about time I tackled that................Here is one, It's the panel immediately forward of the front wheel that continues back between those wheels and bolts under the body.

Image

As always, starts with studying the pictures, making sketches, measuring stuff and generally getting your head around the task, then cutting it out in cardboard.

Image

Then cutting out some steel sheet. I use one of those thin discs in a four inch grinder. Times like this one of them plasma cutters would be like a dream.

Image

Next, find some scrap - this is an old earthing rod. I weld some bits of crap on it to stop it rolling around while I use it to form those ribs.

Image

Image

Image

Of course, it gets offered up regular, it seems like all I do is bolt it on and unbolt it .......Doh, But, it's the only way to be sure it will fit, and much more accurate than measurements transfered.

Image

Gradually taking shape.
