I'm a little lost as to exactly what I'm looking at. A pic from a little longer perspective would let me zero in on the piece.

Virtually all metal on the front end is replaceable. Pretty cheap. But the jobs vary from tough to real hard if you do not have the cutting, welding, fixing and refinishing skills and tools. Check Wolfsburg West, CIP1 and others for the parts.

The other option is to cut out the bad area and replace a smaller piece. Perfectly acceptable unless the damage is widespread or you just lose confidence in the piece. Also perfectly acceptable to hire a smaller job out to a local pro.

Good luck! Keep us posted.

that would be the area under the fuel tank. the steering shaft is in the pic with the universal. the infected area is at the 90 degree where the fuel tank rests and the base. i know this only b/c i had the tank out of mine no less than 675 times recently to install my eberspacher, fuel pump for the heater and seal the tank from rust.
