HONKERSHOP build 2010

Offroad VW based vehicles have problems/insights all their own. Not to mention the knowledge gained in VW durability.

HONKERSHOP build 2010

Post by shopteacher »

Ladies, Gentlemen, and assorted other species...
the crew in the honkershop are ready to introduce the HONKERSHOP 2010 dual sport project.
we secured a build grant to start the 2010 build before we sell project WILDSIDE... but the money will run out soon if WILDSIDE is not sold.
that eases the burden on marketing in a soft market for HP rails.

starting off the build season we secured
Close ratio Weddle equiped 091 from Don's BusBox
3.5 Honda engine and clutch package from Carl at VTECH with help from Kennedy and some others
4x5 Blind Chicken Rear Trailing arms with Microstub hubs
Complete CNC pedal set from Davis Racing
Accessories from Hecker Machine
Supergreasers for 930's from IMCO
PRP seats arriving in JANUARY
12" fox airshocks from rotaryrail and
some AIR/Coilover shocks from MARKSSANDTRANS
Steel from FARWEST with fab help from ASAP FAB

the crew worked with the Bendtech Software and came up with a preliminary design (kids in a candy store!) based on WILDSIDE and the upgrades and modifications the crew decided for 2010
Image Image

UPGRADES the crew wants to do
Center pivot 1.25 DOM a-arms with boxed spindles and a steel bulkhead ( a proven design for many years)
Wider side panels for safety and looks
Roof for safety
HOOD (not hoodlems... lol)
Needle gauges for cluster
shorter wheel base and turning radius for those tight parking lots... lol

what we need... or suggestions for...
1.25" .120 DOM for a-arms with heims and inserts
tabs... oh the tabs....
gauges (the usual)
lights
fuel tank with sender
front boxed spindles
steering rack
gauge cluster (hecker of COURSE)
wheels and tires
steering components (wheel, shaft.. etc)
930 CV's and axles raceprepped with chromoly cages
time...

casey and dustin are graduating this year
but are soon to be replaced with a new crop of go-getters
(one is... GO GET THE TOOLS.. hehe)

after 2 days in the shop with JACK AND BOB... working with the BT software, a PROTOOLS oneshot bender and PROTOOLS 105 we built the basic chassis and welded it out in the jig.

Yesterday we brought it home... NOW the fun begins

Image Image

the crew is considering a BOMBER theme...
something similar to the nose art of fighter/bombers in the air force
Image
hints of a military tribute.. but that is just a little spitfire in the fray (whattaya think leather?)
it is a spec vehicle, but a military tribute vehicle might generate some needed support.. and maybe an enduser
thoughts?

a hood could give a large surface area for graphics

thankyou for your continuing support!
we figured we would start a thread here once the chassis arrived in the honkershop.

I just saw you were online and wondered why you hadn't posted a build for this year. I was fixing to rattle your chain. Nice post. :D
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

DannyK... it is I who am the lucky one! thanks

leaned a while ago
"a post is useless without pictures"
"post enough info so you can get the answers you seek"
and "never post without a plan"

glad to be back! figured you would want to see what we were up to

thanks again for the donations from the contest thread. helped us with our pedal set and fittings from DAVIS RACING

got word from PRP.. they are sending us some seats... black tweed wider and taller than normal. NICE!

One of these years, I'd like to see what these kids could do making a race buggy. :D You and the Kids are awesome, I love following these projects.

funny you should say that
we are planning on running the sportsman class in june at goldendale,wa with this buggy
changes have been made to our design and performance to allow for a light duty race/dual sport/ recreational rail
a primer to things to come
and yes... racing is the way we will continue our program... it is a logical step

Outstanding idea for a cool look. The way your kids build a buggy it will show the pride in the Military. By the way, nice plug for the metal supplier. Keep doing what you do Teach!

support those who support the sport
DOM was hard to find out here.. scot was a great find

hand up... what kind of support could we get to help us build a military themed rail?
our grant money may run out before we finish the project. unless wildside sells.
and... from a marketing point of view... would a military theme help sell the project, which is our ultimate goal, to help continue doing what we do? army, navy, airforce, marines, cost guard, national guard... hmm
thoughts??

nothing set in stone yet... performance and comfort are key points.
3.5l honda, built 091, prp seats, 930 microstubs, 20 inches of travel... those sell themselves.

BOXES are GOOOOD
thankyou PRP
Image
Image Image
Image Image
PRP daily drivers taller and wider than stock with adjustable headrests cut for a sub strap.. black eurotweed(NICE) with PRP logo.
matching sliders mounted to weld in brackets from PacCustoms

we got a box of stuff from a couple other vendors and sponsors
rod ends from ROD END SUPPLY, brackets and stuff from PACIFIC CUSTOMS and some spindles on the way from OMS, pedlas from DAvisRacing... etc
BLIND CHICKEN is bringing up the rear arms this week (the plan) so we can begin measurements for the front suspension and shock mounts
SCOTINDUSTRIES delivered a box of tube.. great price and dropped on your doorstep. NICE

curtis is fitting the crossbar so we can set the steering height and then the seats.. matching the mid setting to our average builder... as you can see.. two of our builders are altitude challenged... so we need to make sure our driver seat can be adjusted up without the need for blocks on the pedals.. LOL

updates are good

looking for a source for AVIATION STYLE bezels and/or gauges (electric)
classicinstruments has a set online...
oil pressure, tach, volts, temp.. basic offroad maybe even a 12v or water filled artificial horizon (anyone have one of those around?) how cool would that be? check your shelves for the honkershop
they will be inserted into a dash panel. going with the BOMBER/FLying tiger theme and tryign to tie in most of the branches of the military. Army, Navy, Airforce, Marines, National Guard, Coast Guard...
remind me.. who doesnt play nice together?

our deal is that it is strictly offroad... if it is street leagl then you have other issues
offroad has "accepted risk" on the part of the driver/operator and is easier to work within the risk management pencil pushers
design it up.. show where the contact points increase the strenght of the frame.. and projtect the driver
find a source for tube
present your metals teacher with all the "yes" answers before they have a chance to say "no"
if not... then find a local fab shop with some time to "mentor" you and have them help you build it.
most of those little fab shops will help students with projects like this... good luck.
call it a "club" and affiliate with your FFA crew... there is the hook.

yeah.. i love my job!

in the shop with mark and mike from Blind Chicken Racing today
set the rear arms and made the "adjustments" as needed
funny how the rear arms and wheel location sets a lot of what you do on a project like this
we started HERE
Image
worked through the day
Image Image Image
and ended up HERE
Image Image
see more pictures from the day at
http://www.honkernet.net/AHS/department ... ension.htm
thanks again to Mark and Mike from Blind CHicken Racing and the to HonkerShop crew that gave up a few hours of their holiday to come in and work on "the bomber"

we made initial contact with speedhut and classicinstruments about our gauge/bezel setup.
still looking for an airspeed indicator and an artificial horizon that wont break the bank.

talk about beefy! HD teflon rod ends from Rod End SUpply and the boxed spindles from Oregon Motorsports 2000>... NICE

Rod End SUpply donated the rod ends and inserts we needed
Kris from Oregon Motorsports 2000 set us up with the spindles and bulkheads (he usually sells these as part of a complete front clip)
Scot Industries provided the 1.25 od .120 DOM for the arms
and Pacific Customs provided the rack and the wheels.
Industrial tire (local and national) donated the tires... 3 rib implement.. but should carve nice
we have a set of dirt tires coming from a friend near albany for roll around

and yes.. with the paddles on the back of the BCR 4x5 we are at 93"
how big is your trailer? 94"? thread the needle... lol
