1967 bug missing front turn signal

Post by crvc »

I have both metal bases with intact bulbs. So far I've found one amber lens with chrome top but not the other. I see several to chose from on ebay but all from earlier years. Is 1967 a unique year for this part or can I use other years?

TIA,

kevin

I believe 67 is a one year only. Anyone know for sure?

It doesn't help that there's dispute amongst parts-sellers, so descriptions of the application of these parts are inconsistent from one to the next.
Here's the way I remember it...could be there were running changes I'm unaware of, but of all the cars I've owned and worked on it's like this.

`67 (with American-market "upright" headlights) uses the same bulbholder as `68/`69 - accepts a 2-filament 1157 lamp.
The lens and cover will interchange with older back to late`64 (single-filament type that came on fenders with the early headlamps).
Left and right side lenses and covers are identical; lens P/N is 111 953 161J

`68/`69 covers are cut back further on their sides to improve functionality as sidemarker lamps; the lenses are also modified slightly to match. Lens P/N is 113 953 161A. You could fit a pair of these to a `67 and most folks wouldn't notice, but they wouldn't be "correct".

...a `68/`69 cover will fit over a `64-`67 lens but unfluted areas of the lens are exposed on the sides and it looks dorky. A `64-`67 cover will not fit over a `68/`69 lens unless you thin the "bulges" on the sides of the lens.

`70 and up (and Things) all use the larger, "two-screw" lamp that has a small sidemarker bulb in the rear (and a different bolt pattern in the fender). These are of course side-specific.

I don't know whether it will be '1967 correct' but I ordered a pair from CIP. They were the cheaper alternative but the catalog says they'll fit. I gave up on this being a show quality car a long time ago. Now I just want something that's functional.

If you got their VWC-113-953-041-J, they're reproductions of late`64-`66 (or Euro-spec `67 with early headlamps) and only accept a single-filament bulb...you'll need `67-`69 bulbholders if you want to have parking lamps.

I've been working on this car for so long that I've lost items. Or put them in unmarked boxes. Just yesterday while rummaging I found the second turn signal unit. It appeared when I was searching for the levers that mount to the tunnel to control heat. Or the mounts for the pop-out quarters, which I also didn't find. So I've got both turn signals now. The amber lenses are too damaged to be used but the chrome tops are fine. If the parts that I ordered aren't useful hopefully I can send them back and find new amber lenses.

This was my first attempt at a full restoration. I never realized it would take so long. If I'd known, I would have taken more care to store and mark everything. Some parts probably weren't lost but used on another VW that I recently sold.
