A stock pulley marks should be just fine with a stroker crank that has been welded and ground off center then too. :o  :D
Hot, humid air is less dense than cooler, drier air. This can allow a golf ball to fly through the air with greater ease, as there won't be as much resistance on the ball.

Nothing like making something simple seem so hard.

Finding TDC is easy, user remove the left side valve cover and rotate the engine until the TDC mark is inline with the case seam. then rock the crank back and forth while observing the rockers on #3. If both are moving then you are on overlap on #3 and at TDC on #1. If both are not moving, rotate the engine 360 degrees and you'll be at TDC on #1.

No special tools needed.
I dunno....

One BIG reason you would want to check that your pulley has accurate marks would be to degree in the cam...

I know im kinda young and inexperienced with vw's but has anyone tried doing this method using a spark plug anti-foul adapter. Its already hollow, threaded for plug and only needs minor drilling and either tapping or welding of a nut on it and your ready to go. Just a suggestion. But if your bored at least theres no core charge on plugs!
That pain in your ass is my boot!
