Air Inlet tube
G'day All,
I'm new to the Forum, but not new to Dubs.
Quick question.
Does the air inlet tube on the 34pict3 need modification for boost? If you blow air directly into this, the fuel in the float chamber bubbles like mad.
Will the use of a boost refrenced pump stop the bowl from being drained of fuel?
I am using a new EMPI 34pict 3
P.S In the process of turboing 1600SP, home made tuckaway. Will post some pictures soon. Thanks.

Well, I haven't been here for a while. If you still are around- You must pressureize the fuel going to the carb! I did it by adding turbo discharge pressure to the bottom of the fuel pump and sealing the pushrod of the pump.

I am also in the process of duplicating your turbo build. I have most of the pieces to begin. I would like to know what size fitting you used to tap into the bottom of the fuel pump and what size line you used from this fitting to boost side of the turbo?

Myself, I glued a bit of 1/8 inch tube into a hole in the base using JBweld. It is not the strongest way to do it. Actually, you would not want anything smaller than that because if your seal leaks a little, a larger tube can deal with it easier. Other than that, it isn't critical.

I drilled and tapped mine for 1/8"NPT, screwed in a 1/8"NPT to 1/4" nipple and ran a 1/4" tube.

Was this video taken at Lancaster Speedway?

Yep! Does it look familiar?
They won't let me run it on regular race nites so I brought it to the Shred and Regan show last year. Had an awful time trying to get out of there early.

I live near the track kinda, I just joined this forum in the hope of finding some info on boosting a type four motor for one of my 914's. I'm trying to decide what setup to do. Not sure weather to go with blow thru carbs vs d jetronic fuel injection, or draw thru (carbon seals in the turbo). I want to do it as cheap as I can.

this setup looks so close to being workable with a decklid....have you got a stock engine you could measure it against?mike thompson wrote:This doesn't pertain to the carb exactly but I made a smooth bend pipe to go to the carb top when I went to the Saab gt17 turbo (it is much better suited to the 1600 -this thing jumps in low gear now). it is hard to see at the top of the pic. I think it helps.
like how far the shroud is from the outside bits?

That exhaust side makes my schwitzer turbo look big. I bet that thing jumps early now!

This Saab turbo seems ideal, yeah, now it makes some power in first gear too.

Mike,
What kind of a oil restriction are you running??
It looks to me like you made some kind of orifice holder there on the feed line.
Also, Is it wise to run a blow off valve in front of the carb even if you have an exhaust blow off on the turbo??

Re: 34PCT turbo mods pics
I know guys run oil restrictors sometimes. I do not. The turbo came off a Saab & had no such thing on it.
Not only does oil lube the turbo - it also cools it.
A blow off valve goes before the carb, it allows the turbo to stay revved up higher during shifts and keeps the turbo from "Surge" -a condition where the air is slamming back and forth in the turbo potentially (in high boost situations) wrecking the impeller blades.

swiwiwiwiw is the noise it makes. I need to hook up my BOV. Use a skinny oil feed line, like 3/16" inner diameter to keep from washing the bearing out.

Thanks for the replies guy,
What I am wondering about tho is if the exhaust blow off does the same function making a BOV redundant.
This is what I am talking about.

Or is this blowoff only for Boost control which I think on this turbo is set for 8 lbs.
